Chicks in the mail a long time

Lost one of my Silver Leghorns today. They had been fine all morning and early afternoon, then it just wilted. I guess it got too hot. I feel terrible. I guess I'll turn the heat lamp off around noon tomorrow. The heat of the day must be enough. I have three others that have been acting puny, I made a "hospital" for them. They do seem a little perkier now. I'm learning on the fly which sucks because my mistakes hurt the chicks. The worst part is I grew up on a farm....and we had chickens!!! Amazing what you can forget in 15 years

Sorry to hear that. My Buffs are about 10 days old and pretty good moving away from the heat lamp if they are hot. I also have them on my sunporch with the airconditioner running so the heat lamp is their only source of warmth. I also grew up with chickens and there is alot that I am having to relearn. Hope that rest of yours perk up,

Found a dead chick this morning. I think it was on the bottom of the chick pile. I'm going to move them to a bigger brooder today. Hard to lose even one.

Jessica and Jenny... sorry to hear about your chicks. I have been having lots of casual talks with my 6 year old twins about the "circle of life". We have been fortunate not to have lost any chicks. I agree with the piling up to keep warm. But mine sometimes pile up if they hear a loud noise. Thankfully I have them on my sunporch so I can keep a close eye on them.
