Christmas present from my chickens! First egg!!

I just bought three hamburgs they are my first chickens. They are just old enough to start laying but i dont want to put a light in their coop. Do you guys have lights in your coops?

If they get less that 13 or 14 hours of light, I believe that they do.....
Or you might just get a few hens to lay, instead of all of them until they get adequate daylight, and let them go natural.

Mine have a heat bulb I turn on during the day if it gets in the negative temps. Turn it on when I feed them in the morning and off when I feed them at night. They have a window for natural light as well

it's "All down hill from here". Not really. It'll just be so much easier to wait for the others now that you actually know your in the ball park.

lol! I'm glad I'm not the only one who was ready to jump for joy over an egg. Funny how it's something we've seen all of our lives at the store (those of us who are new to chickens) can be so exciting when your own chicken lays it.

I will be listening every day now about the time she's laid for her and if I hear, run out and check.
EE eggs would be pretty! My d'uccle eggs are the lightest cream color, they are pretty.

Oh, and it is cool that they know to use the nest box. I have pine shavings on the floor (deep litter) and the nest box has pine shavings. But she seemed to know to go up there. She has gone to the same one each time so far.

Cheryl - I had a pretty Priscilla too, but she died from Mareks I love that name. I have lost 4 girls with P names, so I feel like it's jinxed me!

2 eggs yesterday morning! Back down to one this morning. I think one of the RIRs started laying. It's so much more exciting going down to the coop now!!

Man Stacey, your girls are on a roll!! Good job! I didn't get any eggs today, but got a total of 6 since last Sun., the first day of laying.

Schrebbles, all of my girls are named after women in the Bible. My friend calls them the "Biblical girls", lol

I've gotten 5 eggs since Sunday! really surprised she laid that many so fast.

My names just happened to start with P's, lol! I'm getting a couple chocolate bantam orps, I'll have to be sure not to use a P name. Coco and something else chocolate would be good, suggestions?
