CNN - One person has died and 465 people have gotten sick after interacting with pet poultry

Poor thing. They really did a hack job on the wings. :(

Well the usual "wash your hands" still applies. And don't kiss her, I know some folks love to kiss their birds. Pretty much that's about it.

Oh, since you asked earlier, turtles are the one common pet that carry salmonella, which is why they're often not recommended to small kids.

All reptiles can carry salmonella and it's actually present in all faeces, ours included. Cats, dogs, rats, mice etc etc.

You can catch it because you don't have good hand washing hygiene or because you have consumed improperly prepared food. You can also catch it from infected fruits and vegetables that have been contaminated by rodent droppings when they were stored in a warehouse.

Salmonella is far more prevalent in factory farmed chickens where conditions are not ideal.

That being said we kiss our cockatiels and have never been sick. Our son keeps kissing our chicken chicks and he hasn't got sick (I have repeatedly explained that he could get sick, but they are pretty darn cute). If you are immune compromised you need to be very careful, but otherwise I wouldn't worry too much.

Reading this makes me feel better. Thank you!

It's very rare for people to get salmonella from pet poultry. The reason those people probably got it was because they were kissing dirty birds or licking their hands after handling them. You should be just fine with allowing your chickie indoors. I have been doing the same with my ducks for years with them wearing diapers, because there poo is hard to get out of carpet.

That is my pet hen wearing a diaper.

There have been issues with chicks from a certain hatchery bringing Salmonella to their new owners, although it's not a common problem. hatcheries are very careful to prevent it!
Raw dog and cat food diets have been a much bigger problem, and of course the poultry from the grocery store is often/ usually contaminated.
It's why we wash our hands, dishes, and cook our meats! Kissing critters is a poor idea, no matter how cute they are.
