No.Should I be concerned that my indoor and outdoor hen is going to give me salmonella?
Her comb is nice and red, you must be doing something right.View attachment 2211295
That is my pet hen wearing a diaper.
All reptiles can carry salmonella and it's actually present in all faeces, ours included. Cats, dogs, rats, mice etc etc.
You can catch it because you don't have good hand washing hygiene or because you have consumed improperly prepared food. You can also catch it from infected fruits and vegetables that have been contaminated by rodent droppings when they were stored in a warehouse.
Salmonella is far more prevalent in factory farmed chickens where conditions are not ideal.
That being said we kiss our cockatiels and have never been sick. Our son keeps kissing our chicken chicks and he hasn't got sick (I have repeatedly explained that he could get sick, but they are pretty darn cute). If you are immune compromised you need to be very careful, but otherwise I wouldn't worry too much.
