Cochin Thread!!!

I haven't hatched any Cochins yet but I have hatched Silkies.
This summer, I had 3 hens sitting on eggs. Once the eggs started hatching, the two white ones hogged all the chicks and left none for the blue girl that soooo badly wanted to care for the little things.

After all the eggs had hatched, the blue still had no chicks. I ended up giving her two that hatched in the incubator and stole one from the white girls.

My blue hen was a HAPPY girl!
I can't imagine it would make much of a difference if you took a day old hatchery chick and gave it to a hen as long as the hen was broody? I'm not an expert! But that's what I'm thinking.
I know Silkies will sit on just about anything, it seems, not so familiar with the Cochins yet. Still learning.

Thank you

I'm happy to hear it!

In Sigrid's article below, while she is explaining Tolbunt, she also does a great job of explaining Mille Fleur, as she compares the two. This is one my favorite articles that she has written:

So, is there another name for Tolbunt that I migh recognize? Sorry, this topic interests me.... I have no "colored" birds and don't plan on breeding any, but like learning about it.

I think I've only heard them referred to as Tolbunt here in the U.S. Sometimes you will see it spelled with two "LL's". While not very common, it is seen more in Polish than in other breeds.

But understanding how different genes act, solely and in combination with other genes, is the foundation to working with any patterned birds. And once you figure out the combination of genes that you want/need for your particular birds, you have to keep in mind that the exact same formulas work differently when based on different alleles.

So what I'm getting from that article is that the Cochins I'm seeing referred to as mille fleur simply aren't.

And in the shows, I think the judges are giving a lot of leeway to the Mille Fleurs that are being shown, because they know they are project birds. The Standard for the Mille Fleur Variety is the same for all breeds, whether its a d'Uccle or a Cochin. I've also seen "Calicos" shown - I'm still trying to figure out how they are being judged, as there is no written Standard for the Variety in any breed.

So that is my next question... From what I understand Calico is just over expressed white in the project MFs?
This group of patterns confuses me: MF, Calico, Tolbunt, Harlequin...
Like I said I am only working with Blue, Black and Splash, but I see all of these advertised and sometimes it really confuses me. The color is beautiful though.
