Cochin Thread!!!

It looks to me like you may have the mottling gene at work here. The partridge looks like it has white tips on some of its partridge feathers, the mostly black bird shows some mottled feathers, and my mottled boys all had white bumms and a white chest like that. Now a lot of the white on the partridge chick still looks like down to me not feathers. The belly is the last to truly feather out. The mottled gene takes two copies is it possible that each of the parents have one copy of the mottle gene and it showed up in the chicks unexpectedly? Good luck figuring it it out. Here are pics of my young mottled stock so you can see the similarities. Here they were about four months old.
That looks exactly lime my young boy. Thank you. I don't know the genetics of my starting stock. One of my black girls could well have mottle in her. I am certain my roo has something in him causing all that leakage. I will do some researching on mottled cochin. It is probable that my Partridge girls has it too and may be the roosters sister. That would explain the white chested Partridge girl I have. After searching nearly a year here for a decent Partridge pair I am a bit disappointed. But must make do for now. Perhaps a second mottled project is in order. I still hope I can improve my Partridge as they are extremely rare here in any decent quality. This should be interesting, and a great opportunity to learn some genetics:) Thank you.

Thank you. Obviously, I am very new to this and only set out wanting some "pretty" chickens running around, thus I fell in love with the Cochins.
After one of the post here, I am some what afraid to ask "uneducated" questions concerning color, genetics, standards etc. I do not want to offend any "expert" breeders by asking uneducated questions and/or to not show respect to the breed (because currently my various colors and/or various qualities breed together.)
Once again, thank you for taking the time to explain what "type" means, much appreciated.

don't feel bad.same thing happens to me.I ask a few questions, get a few answers.however, ultimately I usually cross the line and ask a few to many and I guess I frustrate some and get no replies.so I shut up.it also don't help that I ain't real good with the computer either.but, its o.k. at least I got a few important questions answered and I can still read and learn.just did w/your post.I did'nt know what type was either, just going on assumption.^_^

question-Does or has anyone used wire cages for breeding pairs (bantams)? I want a tempory situation to put a pair in until we get my second breeding/show pen this summer..and my plan just fell through.

Was thinking of getting 24w x 24h x 36L, not sure if this is to small? I was quoted $35 per cage, not sure if thats a fair price or not.-Need something I can put on a table in the garage until it warms up, and I can reuse this size for a brooder in a month.

My original plan was to put them in our extra large water trough and put wire across the top, but we need it for the cattle right now.

I just got my first cochin chicks and have fallen in love with them already. I got some Blue, Black, and Splash. Does anyone have any good pictures of the Splash?

If anyone is interested in some bantams I have a blue pair and a splash pair for sale right now. Pm me for info. We are building a house this year and I'm cutting back on my Cochins some.

I bought 2.5' x 2.5' x 7' cages for my breeding pens. I have 6 in one (it's a bit cramped, but it's temporary), 4 comfortably in one, 3 in half of one and 2 in the other half. Two in the 2.5' x 2.5' x 3.5' is quite suitable, imo. I paid $100 for all 7 of my cages, but the guy had them for awhile and wanted them gone, so I can't say if $35 each is a good price or not.

This is my setup - pens below for breeding, cages above for show birds, roosters or birds that just don't fit elsewhere.

I do have a few pairs in cages and sometimes get eggs from those hens.

It looks like you have bantoms, what size are your breeder cage's? I will have large fowl cochins, what size would you recomend for them?
