Cochin Thread!!!

Unreal! I can't believe how many different breeds there are!!!!!!! Wow!!!!!!! I am learning so much!!!!

Are my two golden laced cochins both pullets? All the chicks are 8 weeks old. Their combs are pale, but there is a little pink at the base. They don't act "roosterie", but the one on the right did "call" the other chicks for meal worms. I am hoping the only boy in the bunch is the silver sebright. The "monster" chick is supposed to be an araucana, she already weighs about a pound, and is bigger than some of my serama's.

I just LOVE the cochins! The cochin chicks are the calmest chicks I have ever had! The one on the left is like a stuffed animal, she is so docile, even more so than the silkie (which is pretty calm).

Very cute. I am also wanting to know how and when you can tell pullets from cockerels in Cochins. I only have Silkies that take forever to know which is which

Pretty sure that both GL are pullets and the SL is a Cockerel. A GL Cockerel at that age would look like the SL as far as comb.

What color would this roo be? It was labeled blue columbian (or blue buff columbian) or blue calico. I looked for pictures but can't find any that look like him.

He looks like a cross of several things but he is a very pretty boy :)
I guess I should just say, he's not a recognized color and you won't be able to find anything that defines him. Pretty boy.

He is one of my favorites. I just love his coloring! I would love to hatch more for my yard but the only hens I have are calico, black, mottled, buff and lavendar. I just put him with my calico to see what they make. :)

i have noticed that i can get a good idea of which is a pullet and with is a cockerel by the week 1 -2, the feathering on the boys does tend to come in slower, especially with regard to the wings.

By 2 to 3 weeks you can see which of the chicks has redder wattles and comb, although sometimes difficult, the wattles on the males start swelling at 2-3 weeks, and some begin to redden.

In the pic below, although blurry, you can see two chicks at 3 weeks, the cockerel(left) has redder wattles and in not completely feathered in like the pullet(right).

Close up of wattle development at 3-4 weeks (cockerel)

a self blue barred frizzle at 4 weeks, you also notice the upright stance, and red comb and wattles coming in. (cockerel)

A black frizzle at 3 and a half weeks, this boy developed a bit quicker, but was very obviously a boy at 2 weeks. (cockerel)

and lastly a mottled partridge pullet at 4 weeks. No swollen wattles and no red/pink comb comb.

I have had some pullets that developed slower, but didnt have any surprises in this years hatch of about 30 birds. If you are still not certain, then by 6 weeks there should be very definite signs. Hope that helps.

Thank you, this is very helpful. My chicks are only about week old and I see that two have longer wing feathers and one has very short wing feather. It will be fun to watch and see how that goes. With the silkies I am sometimes still figuring who is what at 4+ months old! The better the quality they are the harder it is to tell.

Here's some pics of bantam cochins that I picked up from a chicken swap. I don't normally buy at the chicken swaps, but I have wanted some cochins for awhile and bought these. I just want affirmation that these are pet quality so I can take them to next weekend's chicken swap and sell them. I have some bantam cochin eggs in the incubator that I bought from a breeder here and don't want to keep any pet quality birds. So ... here they are. What do you think of them? Specifically, if you can, what's wrong with them as far as breeding and/or showing go. Appreciate any input.
