Cochin Thread!!!

Hi all!
New to cochins, I have two 2 week old cochins, one white and one is a splash.
I am hoping to have these brood for me.
Any suggestions on how to sex the chicks or what to look for?

Thanks from Ohio

Quote: guessing you want to work on black tailed reds? i have a black tailed red (w/ minimal columbian markings) cockerel from my mille fleur pen i'm going to be working into my reds that are growing out... he's on the smallish side, but i think that can be worked with, if the color carries over. i'll be posting pics of my reds once they're feathered in. right now they're about 3 weeks old. the cockerel is closer to 6 months.

I'm letting all my broody hens keep their eggs and I've turned off my incubators :)

I'm overstocked with red chicks and started reds.

Same with my mille, porcelain and brown red d'Uccles.

I have columbian chicks hatched from purchased eggs - hoping for at least a breeding pair.

And one of my buff hens has gone broody, so that's really exciting.

Hi all, we had a brief bit of sunshine so i thought i would try out the camera on my new cell phone

Please be as critical as you like, i need to learn and don't take offense... i know these are not show quality, even the show quality birds here don't look like your show quality in the States, that is why i am trying to learn as much as i can and breed the best quality birds i can with what is available

My partridge cockerel. It took me two years to find a partridge cockerel here in South Africa, he is decent but not the best type, and is split for mottled.

my cockerel showing me how straight he can stand up:) he had a perfect comb until a tussle with my dominant black hen.

one of my pet quality black hens having a snooze

a partridge pullet, the colour on her chest is a bit too light, but is she is part of my breeding stock, only the second partridge i have seen here for quite some time, and the first with yellow feet and beak.

my mottled cockerel, like the foot colour, not sure about the beak, this boy came from a my partridge cockerel X black hen, as part of my improving partridge project. Note the leakage in the hackle feathers

one of my white hens having a dustbath

and getting annoyed at all the pictures

Another of my black pet quality hens, i am using them as broodies, the power supply here isn't consistent enough for me to use an incubator yet

. Excuse the pic, she was rushing past as she had lost her chicks for a moment. I do like her shape though.

white hen having a drink, she has just come out of her first hard moult after raising her first flock

my partridge pullet, lost the second tip on her comb from a fight, but she is the base of my improving partridge project.

group pic.

And lastly the strange little mottled partridge pullet, i was really not expecting this girl, as i only had two partridge eggs under a broody. I need to get my partridge a bit darker and better typed, so i had no intention of hatching partridge at this stage, but two partridge eggs were "snuck" under a broody and this was one of hatches.

She has good feet and beak though, and is staying. Her she is doing her best giraffe impression.
