Cochin Thread!!!

Thank you! I don't know who nominated me but thank you for the recognition. Hopefully everyone's breeding programs are turning out expected results.

I did a Poultry seminar for one of the County 4-H groups over the weekend. Around 20 very enthusiastic young poultrymen and poultrywomen. It was interesting because they didn't know what kind of birds they had. They had gotten chicks from a co-op and they were all pullets, that's what they knew. So I identified them for them (they are around 8 weeks old (the chickens), and they now have to do research on their breeds. Their fair is in 3 weeks so they'll be pretty young for showing, but it's still a good experience for them. Showmanship class should be fun. I am judging their fair so I told them what I'd be expecting. They didn't have any Cochins. Some Buff Orpingtons, White Rocks, White Leghorns, a Red Naked Neck, and a White Ameraucana.

Thanks!

As far as the chicks go, I'd say they are all splash except for the black chick. Most likely they'll show some degree of lemon/gold in the hackle or saddle if they are cockerels. There's a silkie or two in that pic too right? The one at least looks to have a beard. What was the breeding matchup that the Cochins came from?

Took several pictures of some of my newer chicks. Hard to tell but there are 15 chicks in that 1st pic. There are Columbians and Columbian Cock on Black hen offspring in that pic.
15 chicks in this pic. Most were asleep until the flash went off.

Pattern already showing up well on this 8 day old Columbian chick.

That was the last batch of chicks I will hatch with Columbian/Black cross this spring. Hatching 10-16 more Columbians every Saturday. Will stop setting Columbian eggs at the end of May.

I'll be interested in how the Columbian X Black chicks progress. They should look pretty much like Birchens. Males may show incomplete lacing in the saddles.

I just got this hen and I'm kind of stumped on her color. Any guesses? She is an adult standard hen and I know nothing about her background. She is not in good feather condition right now from breeding. The pictures do show her true color. What do you think? Also does her quality look good enough to keep? My goal is to have a few standard cochins that are nice enough to show. Critique her..it won't hurt my feelings.

I was going to say washed out buff until I saw a bit of Columbian pattern in those feathers. She may be a cross of varieties and was used in someone's program.

Thanks Tom - the roo is a lemon splash, with a splash hen, 2 blues, and a birchen. I think the bearded look may be from movement, they were not cooperating well for the camera.

I will take some more pictures when they are a little older, they should all be splits to LB at least. They are the cutest chicks I have ever seen, but all they seem to do is sleep. All the time. Anywhere, including in the food and water dishes.
