Cochin Thread!!!

I hatched 3 bantam cochins....

looks like a blue roo, a barred roo and a mottled pullet

so if i kept a breeding pair- what should I keep so when i hatch eggs i get showable chicks?

No guarantees but in my opinion the best choice that would work is the Blue Rooster and the Mottled pullet. I will say you can show anything but if you want to be competitive you must start with birds from a good breeder and a plan. Hatchery birds do not have much of a chance of being show material. keep asking questions.Good luck.

I would like to buy my son a breeding pair or trio of Lemon Blue or Mille Fleur bantam cochins that are SQ. There are no listed breeders in MO so I know I will need to have them shipped. He is an amazing young man that wants to raise quality birds. Does anyone have any available? I would prefer birds that are 6 months to 1 1/2 year old. Please email or PM me if you have any or can lead me to some. Thank you.

That's a rather impossible quest so, I'd like to save you a little time. The milles are, first of all, not a recognized variety so... they cannot be "show quality." Second of all, anyone who is using show quality typed birds to produce the mille fleur pattern is still a mighty long way to the finish line so.. pattern will not be correct and the birds won't breed true for some time. Anyone who has good pattern, has most likely bypassed the quality type part and has some serious work to do in that dept. There may be someone out there in the boonies who has been breeding these beauties for 10-15 years and actually has what you want.. but, they have yet to make themselves known

As for lemon blue, I am no expert on that. I think there are a couple folks on here with some good ones. One is Candis, I think.. and she'll probably chime in here soon. I think a couple of others may have them. Good Luck. If your son would like to show cochins, there are many recognized varieties and show breeders will be on the cochinsinternational website http://cochinsint.com/

Thanks for the info on Mille Fleur Cochins. He went through to pick out his favorites but has many more on the list. He also loves the Partridge, which I believe are more common, and the Brown, . We did look at the Cochin International site but struggled to find ones that listed any for sale. I know its a tall order but worth asking for.

Can anyone tell me the colors that are recognized by the APA in the latest book?

http://showbirdbid.proboards.com/ Here's the showbird site which has some for sale. And, you can check out the BYC breeds database for recognized varieties.

The only person with the browns is Bo Garret and he's on here though still far from having birds who breed true and I don't think he's selling any yet. They are recognized but lost their following some years ago and died out. Bo is currently trying to bring them back.

Once you select which variety you'd like to get, try googling around images and seeing who'd got the good stuff and contact them personally. Partridge are beautiful and there are few good breeders out there with nice stuff. The proboards may help or... google... Coopa Cabana on here has some beautiful ones. If she's not selling, I am sure she can point you in the right direction.
