Cochin Thread!!!

My day started off fantastic, and it stayed that way all day. At 11 tonight is when it went downhill. Picked up my bf from work on his lunch cause I had his car, he was bringing me back home so he could go back to work and we had a wreck. Swerved to miss a dog and instead smacked a tree head-on. The car is beyond repair but we are both ok, just gonna be really sore for a few days. Guess that means I will be spending alot of time with my birds the next few days! :)

So sorry!, Chnicken therapy is what the Dr. ordered - seriously; glad you are o.k.

This scares me to think of a new bantam with in with several standard sized chickens that are on their home turf. It is not impossible for her to suffer brain injury from getting hit that hard. Does your other bantam hang out with the standards? I would put your new girl in an open wire cage in the area where the standards can see her from all directions and interact through the wire, but not allow them to get to her. When and if they start to ignore her, then you could try opening the cage door and let her come out on her own, but I strongly recommend that you are present when she comes out. I believe in being VERY careful when introducing new birds to each other. By the way this may take several days or even weeks.

I am a new cochin owner. I brought her into my flock of 3 Americauna and 1 bantam with crest. I don't know if she is a bantam or regular size. I have a few questions.

1) Do they sleep more? I have her in the house some while integrating her into my flock - she sleeps every time she sits on my lap.
2) Where do they sleep naturally. I set her on a roost last night and did have to move her off - After waiting 1 hour for her to sleep in - I finally grabbed her. I wonder if she would have sat all day and starved???
3) I put her in with 3 of 4 last night - I moved the meanest Americauna into a new house - will tonight too.
4. So far so good - she is getting pecked hard - but one at a time. No blood.

@jette- Poor little thing...she sounds stressed out

I hope it works out! I'm glad you are looking for help with what to do!

At least you are aware there is an issue. This is what I went through the other day.. I know people say roosters will be roosters, and I know they will...but people need to separate them when they are doing this stuff!

If i breed my Gl rooster over a black cochin hen what will the chicks look like.

I am beginning to think if someone doesn't have an idea what they will get when making a cross they should not be doing outcrosses. If there is a plan to cross back to improve either variety it doesn't matter what the chicks look like as they are the key to possible improvement. What Coopa posted is correct on what you get.
