Cochin Thread!!!

Lucky you!!!! Can you AI 3 hens with one rooster in one shot? How many days a week do you AI? Thats what I am wanting to do. Someone told me they mixed it with water but I wasn't sure if I wanted to follow that advice. Argh I need help. I just switched my original rooster back in with the hens after taking him out for 5 days and putting another rooster in. Every time I go out there I see something different. And of course my 2 best hens went n break now.

I wouldn't try a 3 from 1. I would not dilute either. ! hen per Rooster per day. do a different hen each day and all will be fine with 3 day intervals between AI, If you are not going to show them you can pluck them and get fertile eggs for about 6-7 weeks before feathers grow enough to block fertilization.

He looks good. I can't really tell much about his cushion. But overall he looks good. Hopefully the mate you breed him with will beget some larger cochins. Now that you mentioned it~he does look a little cranky in the picture lol

I'll get some better pictures tomorrow. I was out snapping pics and he was there picking things up for me again, so I got one of him, too.

Craig,

OK I can do that. I trimmed the hens feathers and Buddy is really good with the AI. :) Thanks :) I won't be showing them any time soon. ~~~ I have been trying to get on here for 2 hrs practically and the new program wouldn't let me post. frustrating..especially when I want to say something.

This is what I have seen people do when they post pictures. I don't have a farm name so I just put that on there. I have also seen it where it is much bigger and goes across the whole picture but for sure it covers the chickens. Picnik~ It is at a free photo editing site~picnik.com~you can add words to your pictures but they will be closing April 19 so I don't know what will take its place then.

Trimming doesn't grow back until they molt. Plucking does grow back

ETHICS and OTHER THOUGHTS

Sorry if I ramble on this one. So many thoughts going through my mind.

If you ask what will I get when I cross x with y I will not answer. The answer is a mutt/chicken. They can be beautiful yard birds but I don't think they offer much to the breed as a whole.

I really like most of the people I meet at shows. I have learned SO much from them. Listen to those who have done it and are willing to share their knowledge with me/us.. Don't talk except to ask questions and accept their incredible gift.

People who use our pictures to sell their product / eggs for a profit make me mad. Take a picture of your own bird. If it isn't good enough then take another picture. If the bird isn't good to use pictures of maybe you should not be selling eggs from it.

I stay on the Cochin thread only so I don't make myself angry over the childish and stupid stuff I see sometimes. In general I am proud of the Cochin enthusiasts on this thread. Gail for keeping me much nicer and focused as well as her leadership with the Cochin International Breeders guide. Casey for coming back and helping all of us with his knowledge. Tom for his leadership in the breed and sharing his Columbians with me.

If someone wants to show and is unsure what to do PM me and I will walk you through the process. I will help if I can. It is only scary the first time. It keeps getting easier the more I do it.

that you are still on this thread Craig, and Casey, and Tom, and Gail and the other cochin enthusiasts that are serious about the breed and love them. I am very serious about it and would clasifiy myself as a newcomer. I have lots of questions to ask. So thank you all for your feedback and help.

So sorry Lynne. That bites! And so sorry Casey. (about the pictures)

I too have thought there was a lot of silliness going on here, but haven't been on other sites to know any different. I wasnt going to say anything but hey, nows the time I guess. Years ago (well not that many years), when I bought some hatching eggs on here, I was very careful and researched the people before I ever bought any eggs. And I didn't go through the auction, I did it privately. I was very shy about who I bought eggs from.

I just hope you guys/gals stay on here to help us newbies along.

I will pluck then Craig. Maybe one bird a day. Even though I don't want to.

So ~ What do you think of my hen? She is the best one I have, I think. I have been having trouble with their combs, but if I breed enough of them I should hopefully get some good ones. I like her comb best but she isn't laying right now.

Pluck the hens vent and up and the rooster vent and below. . You can check as you go to see if feathers will interfere with contact. It will seem like lots of feathers.

She is a keeper
