Cochin Thread!!!

These are my new blue cochin bantams. It looks like I have 3 splashes. 5 chicks are 2 weeks old and the others are less than a week. The ones in the LG are a day old. I took them fom mama as the splash was cold and almost dead, it got lost in the nest. And I just took the other one too. It wasn't mamas fault. There was a chicken harrassing her, poor thing. I have 6 more eggs that I took from mama and nothing so far. Also 16 eggs in incubator on top of that that are 10 days along. Mama has 2 chicks outside.

I see out of these 12 I have 2 that have dark on the front of their legs and one that is smaller than the rest. The rest have yellow legs through and through. I wish I could mark them somehow. I need to see if I can feather sex them.

StevenW what an adorable chick. What type of incubator is that?

Rey Vaughn nice buff columbian and the splash one. He has some nice foot feathers on him.
An R-Com 20. I was having such horrible luck with having shipped eggs develop till hatching time and they just die on me. I finally decided to get an R-Com because I wanted something that I could trust.

I read on a different thread that someone was using a drop of food coloring on the chicks' heads to mark them. Hope this helps.

Yes thanks. I could do that for now and I must order some leg bands. I wuld like to mark them right away though because I know soon there will be chicks everywhere and it will be harder to keep track of them. What kind of chick is in your avatar?

It looks like a nice incubator. I have a Genesis 1588 I got used and a little giant and I am not that pleased with them, but better than nothin' hey? Hence, I do not like buying shipped eggs either.

Good site, my skin is still crawling. One of my new boys had chicken mites when I purchased him and I would not have found them if I hadn't picked him up late in the evening to clean a poopy bum. It was pretty awful. I regularly treat my coops and birds for internal/external parasites and had never seen one of my birds with live mites on them and they all get picked up and gone over on a regular basis so I was shocked when I turned this boy over and he had them crawling all around his vent. Ick!! Good info, and good to pay attention to for the welfare of your birds, those big fluffy cochin feathers are a great hiding place for bugs.

I found this site about mites. Check it out. It can be hard to tell if you have a problem unless you check regularly.

i use small zip ties to mark chicks from different hatches or breedings, and just snip them off and replace when they start getting snug. they come in a variety of colors, and if needed you can alter which leg or use multiple zip ties, if you start running out of colors... i got 5 colors in a pack from lowes which gives 20 possible variations if you use 1 or 2 ties, just on one leg alone. lol
