Cochin Thread!!!

I was only able to hatch 4 chicks from 3 dozen of her eggs.  Shipping was pretty rough on them.  When they were about 7 weeks old, I was sure that they were all boys. They had large combs for such a young age, but after another month, it became clear that there was only 1 boy and 3 girls.  Are they still young?  Maybe they just need more time.  It's odd to have that many boys, but not impossible.

As far as the roosters go, I wish there was someone like that around here.  That's really nice of him to take in roosters.  I'm trying to rehome 4 or 5 of mine right now and it's a very slow process.  It takes me forever to decide who stays and who goes (I love them all) and then when I finally make the decision, no one wants them.

Last time I got lucky, a man came with his daughter to pick out a rooster for their flock and they loved him so much, they came back for another and told their friends how incredibly friendly our roosters were.  That time, they went pretty fast and each one went to a great home.

I hold th til they crow. I have hatched several from Roslyn that crow very early. As early as 2 weeks old. I held onto him the longest I loved him so much. Lol

Hi there,
I was wondering if you could help me.
I picked up 7 mixed chicks yesterday from a local breeder.
They're all purebred, but because I wasn't fussed what breeds I got, he just grabbed the best looking 7 from the bator as quickly as possible (still others hatching in there).

I asked him what he thought I had in there, and from a quick peek in the top of the box, he thought there was an Australorp...
When I had a better look after introducing them to my broody, the black chick has feathered feet and seems noticably smaller than the other chicks.
Now I'm wondering if it's not a bantam cochin?

Wdyt? (thanks so much!)

Hi all,
I was thinking of getting a bantam (or large fowl possibly) cochin! Can I have some info on them?? pros and cons? egg production? temperament? Climate tolerance?? Thanks!

It was picture day today.
And Beaker found a new friend.

Well, first I'm defintely no pro or old timer wih chickens. Got my first this last June. So for what it's worth here is my two cents:

I currently have 29 chickens with 25 being LF & bantam cochins.
Mine are super sweet and calm.
They are pretty easy to sex early on, like at about 4 weeks.
Of course a bantam egg is going to be smaller and from what I've read neither LF or bantam are up there in the top rated for egg laying. My LF just started laying about a month ago and the size of egg is your avg. sz.
If you intend to breed, many people trim the feathers on the back end because they can get in the way of "getting the job done", if you catch my drift. My bantams have been laying now for about two months, so here in a month or so I will attempt to hatch some of my own babies for the first time. So, will see, I may have to do the trimming thing if no success with fertility.

One of the things you will always here is that they are GREAT brooders & many people have one or two sometimes just to hatch other eggs.
My understanding is that they are cold hardy and do good in heat but not extreme extreme heat.

So, anyways, as I said no pro opinion here. We set out wanting a few laying hens and I wanted some "pretty chickens" to try and breed. My first buy was bantam cochins & a few silkies (all babies). The cochins seemed to be (for me) more friendly, less skiddish, so I stuck with them and gave the silkies to my daughter. I just know I thoroughly enjoy mine and can't wait to start hatching my own babies.

Let us know what you decide and of course share pics, we love pics

i'm going to guess, based on my own past experiences, if it is a cochin, it's either going to be birchen (first choice) or black... but black chicks tend to have more yellow down IMO.

Here is one of my Cochin babies, the only one that I'm sure is a pullet so far.
Leg feathering... Is this the proper way for them to feather in on their legs?

thanks so much! Birchen would be beautiful! Any way I can tell for sure if its a Cochin?

Chicken lover check out the chicken breeds tab on byc and find cochin...that will give you all that info plus more..people also rate/review the breeds so you can read those.
