Cochin Thread!!!

The variety is mottled, the lady I bought them from said this is her first time selling hatching eggs. They are not form a hatchery. I shall have to ask her where she got them. I was just going to wait and see how they turn out. XD When I bought the eggs, I was not thinking about breeding at first, but once I got my 2 LF Cochins, that is when I decided I want to breed them.

Ok, I'm sure this post has been asked before, but I'm a newby so bare with me. I'm trying to decide what breed to start my new flock with. I'm stuck between Cochins and orpingtons. Cochins is what I'm leaning towards. But I only have room for one roo and would love to get more than one color of hens. Sooooo....that being said. What color would a blue Cochin roo over a silver laced hen throw? Or is there a definite answer to that.

The answer is that it will not be a recognized variety. What it probably would be is an attractive pet quality yard bird. It will not fit any breeding program but might look good in your yard. Not much market for your extra chicks from a cross like that so that is something to think about.

If you breed buff to white, what colors would you get? I'm going to an auction here pretty soon and here they have a nice trio of whites avalible. If I do purchase them, I would be adding buff to the pen, and am wondering what kind of colors I would get.

Tony we need some pictures of yours!
Craig you are right! I need to get pictures. I haven't yet because I see such beautiful birds here I am affraid to show mine. LOL
I just took all of my silver penciled, splash a few buffs and 2 of my columbian cockerals to a sale.

I had 3 cockerals in columbian and hated to get rid of any. I simply didn't have the space to seperate them and they were picking each others butts so bad. I hope and believe I kept the best one. I now have a trio of columbians, a quad of buff columbians, a quad of black mottleds. I also kept a MF pullet that I hatched last spring from WestknollAmy and mottled hen that was the sole survivor of my original birds. She has great type but just too much white. I just can't get rid of her. I guess she will always have a home here just like that little girl you have Craig.

I promise I will get pictures soon!

But I did take pictures of my hatch I just put in the brooder.

Keep in mind I have no idea what these guys will turn out to be. I had one pen that had 3 columbian roos, 2 columbian hens, 3 slash hens and one roo, MF project hen, mottled hen, buff roo, 3 buff hens, silver penciled hen.
Another pen had silver penciled roo, silver penciled hen, 3 buff hens, black roo, black hen, bule roo and 2 blue hens.

So I have a lot of mixes. I will not keep any of these but I had the itch to incubate! I now have my pens seperated and only have what I mentioned above.

So here are the 23 babies in the brooder so far.

Not sure what this little chipmunk guy is.. I think it may be from the MF project girl and maybe a columbian roo.
