Cochin Thread!!!

I put my 2 Splash cochins together about a week ago. She was laying every other day up until I put them together. Now she quit laying. Is that normal, like a stress thing or something? I was hoping to hatch out some babies soon. :(

^good to know..I was doing fertility checks while chicken setting this past week on Lavenderder Orpingtons and was having a hard time.

I went and bought a new recliner today, (I had to explain my dye'd hands to my hubby, he was less then enthused)...here's how the akward conversation went with the salesperson..

Salesmen-What happened to your hands?
Me-Oh just food coloring, its stained on
Salesmen-What were you dying that you go it on your hands
Me-Uhhh Umm Uhh I dont know
Salesman- You dont know what your were dying??!!?
Me-Uhh eggs, yah it was eggs

Hubby had to walk away, how do you explain to the salesman that your were dying chicken vents??
Bahahaha! I love it... I like the recliner we ended up getting from the back clearance room at the lazboy store on 28th street. All the regular priced stuff there is pretty expensive. I think I will try a Q-tip. Will the Wilton cake colors work, and if they get onto the surface of the egg, will they soak through and possibly hurt the developing embryo?

ok so I cracked Dottie's egg today...it is fertile...yes?

That's a good one!

If it was me, I would have told the salesguy I was dying chicken butts just to see what kind of a reaction I would get.

Actually, I might have to do this with my partridge pullet. I swear she's laying! She's about 8 months old, she's totally going broody. I found her in the coop today sitting on 2 eggs and she was very mad when I took them away from her. lol And talk about mad!! One of our white hens, some sort of an EE, literally ran into their coop today when she saw me heading in to collect eggs. She plopped herself right on the eggs and let out such a screech when I put my hand near her. I was shocked. I didn't think chickens could make such noises.

And I swear she wanted to kill me when I pulled those eggs from her. Then she chased me out of the coop and continued her mantra out in their run for a good half hour after I had left.

Girls are so dramatic.

Not sure if they will dye the eggs, I got one egg today and it worked! There was yellow streaks on it..I ended up getting ours art van for $200 on the clearance sectiin..great deal for a nice recliner!

Ok, Thanks, I thought it was weird. She's been in my house for a month so I could separate her from other roosters (didn't have any where else to put her, LOL) and then I brought him in and she hasn't laid one since. I'm ready to hatch some chickies!!

It never ascends far enough up the reproductive tract to get incorporated into the egg contents. Just a few streaks on the egg. I have been hatching these for years with no ill effects. But feel free to invest in trap nests if you prefer.

Sounds good - I just did not know if there would be a difference between generic food coloring and the wilton cake colors. I guess if it is all made for eating, it should be fine.

On another topic, at what age do most bantam cochin cockerals start fertilizing the eggs. Our new cockerel "El Guapo" will be five months old the end of this month. He does lots of dancing and certainly acts like a boy. We also have another rooster "Orion" that is about 9-10 months old. He has a bit shorter legs and I am thinking I may have to AI to get anything from him. I haven't ever seen him mount anybody, but then again it is Michigan and I'm not sure if I would be game for any action outdoors right now either.

Also - whenever I try to put the two roosters together they really go at it, jumping at each other and pecking. Will I have to keep them separate, or should I just give them some time to work it out? I have never introduced two cockerals together that are this old before, usually one is older and established, and the other is young and not crowing yet. El Guapo crows at 3 am, so he is certainly in touch with his manliness.

Could be the change, how long has she been laying regularly. If she's been at it for a while she just might have completed enough of her cycle and is going to go broody or just stop for a bit. Some hens will stop and take a break after laying 8 or more eggs, some go on forever.............
