Here are some pics of our bantam cochin hens, roosters, and a buff hen (she hangs out with them)
If this post is in the wrong place or in the middle of someone's conversation, I apologize, I'm still learning :)

This is Cotton, she loves having her picture taken.

Sigh

that sounds like another project and I am already doing silkied ams!

Mille Fleur is definitely a "program." Calico is just pretty birds headed for your backyard. If that is what you want, you've got a great start. That one pullet is the closest you have to a real Mille Fleur, but as you now know it's a program and a long road ahead. If you ever decide you really WANT Mille Fleur, make sure you do your homework and really SEARCH for Mille Fleur breeders. Look at the Mille Fleur pattern on other breeds so you know what it should look like and where you're going. DON"T be confused by people that say they are breeding Mille Fleur and are calling the coined name "Calico" a Mille Fleur. I'm not saying these folks are lying, they just don't have a full understanding of what goes into breeding a variety that breeds true.
Breeding chicken varieties is SO much more complicated than I ever thought when I first started. You can not look at two birds and think, "hummmm, they look like they might produce "look A" and then begin selecting birds that LOOK like the bird you're trying to create. You MUST have a basic understanding of the genetics of poultry and find people that have a true knowledge of the science. That way when you make your selections you have people that really KNOW, and you can pick their brains. Almost everyone, without exception that I can think of has been as helpful as they could possibly be when I have gone and asked for help. I do try to search for info on the Internet and do as much research as I can on my own before I go to the truly knowledgeable and ask to take up their time. I know how far ahead of me they are and I don't want to waste their time, I need to atleast be able to understand what they are talking about.

AMEN! I TOTALLY understand what you are saying. I agree. I think many many people could benefit from this approach to beginning projects.:D I think I understand perfectly. In other words if I like the cochins enough to breed them educate myself first ( like I did with ameraucanas) well here is the thing I DO like them enough to breed them. I have managed to figure out if I don't want to breed them and keep them around and like looking at them I don't need them. So all the breeds we have we plan to breed at some point. I didn't know I wanted the Cochins until we got them and now that we have I just love them. SO since we will at some point want to breed them I need to educate myself about them. I already have these so just wanted to see if these are good enough to breed " well" I wouldn't want to begin a project lol. I dint know she was a Millie since that isn't what a Millie looked like IMO. Ugh...and some of the other ones I wouldn't have been able to even begin to tell you the colors. Sigh.
In ameraucanas there SOP colors they are all solid except splash.and I just don't have any colors that are like these little buggers except maybe jubilees. These can be really colorful lol and it seems like each color is a project...mottled then the Millie's. I know I want to get some more of them, then I will need to separate them out into colors for breeding and selling of eggs...it's gonna be a while and in that time I will have time to educate myself...and while some decent babies are growing out...these sound like they are muddled up. Funny that since the lady I got these from keeps here separated by color. But I have heard some of her stock may not be the best in some cases. Can you point me in the direction of someone with good stock to start with? And just to be clear..a calico is basically a failure in a an attempt to get a good Millie fluer? Lol with an ameraucana if a color comes out wrong for any reason then it is an EE a mutt basically. Lol wish we could have a cool color to call our mess ups lol. Of course we kinda do. I am working on LAV ams. They are NOT an APA recognized color. We are trying...some think we are close...I am also working on ANOTHER project silkied Ameraucanas as well as that, I would eventually like to have LAV silkied ams.

As far as finding a breeder, that would depend on the variety that you are looking for.

Just look at my boy now! He's so pretty. He crowed for the first time the other day. He is not the dominant rooster and has yet to successfully mate (to my knowledge) the other rooster always stops him.

Thanks, I have often been in a position to wish for education in others about the breeds and things I am into so I Do " get" it..lol these are such precious little puddings to me...anything I see on here basically I am still in the ewwww and ahhhhh stage... I know the more " educated" I become, the more it just becomes the EWWWWWW and yuck stage when you see the ones that look a bit "muddled". hahahahahahahahaha. With the education comes the loss of appreciation for any thing other than how it " should be" lol my poor little ones are so adorable still I almost hate to educate myself until I " see" all their flaws... I'm already getting REALLY critical about their little cushions, and stances...the more I read...the uglier the little darlin's are gonna get

Had to add a pic of our cochin. She is 5mo old and one of my favorite chickens.

Here she is with her best friends, our D'Uccle and Partridge Rock

I love that fluffy butt!
