Cochin Thread!!!

We actually only had 3 black cochin hens, and they took two fluffy ones. These aren't show quality, but they were filling out nicely and had good feather quality with a nice sheen to them. Not expensive but two of our better looking birds. We've talked to a few neighbors, and they all called the police department to complain that this was not being taken seriously. These particular hens weren't laying yet but the breeding pair of OEG were breeding and we were getting eggs. That's food out of my kids mouths when they were stolen. We have put posters up and will just have to wait and see. Appreciate all y'alls advice and letting me vent!

You have lovely vocal neighbors to have your back on this. It really sounds like a frustrated kid who wanted those chickens. Which means he/she has seen them before. Seriously. They even picked the two fluffy ones out of three. Oh and they left you one. Not only that but he shut the door behind him so the others wouldnt get out. Kids just dont realize the implications often times. He left you a black one. He didnt take very many, in his mind, He may not even realize you would miss them. My guess is a kid 10-14. Probably male.Too young to see how he could earn the money to buy them. He will tell his parents his friend gave them to him. The friend who also has chickens.

What do you think? She sure is a sweetie and already as big as the hens in my layer flock. I'm thinking about getting a blue pair to go with her because who can have just 1 Cochin.

That is wonderful that you have active neighbors! We had someone shooting guns everywhere past children even and not one neighbor would get off their lazy buts to do anything. It was shocking. The police sat here on 4 different occasions waiting for one of us to get shot to be able to do something. We live in a crazy world. Record everything. Even though you spoke with the police it will probably not be on file so to say. I recorded on my phone 23 minutes of the last shooting session with the cops just standing around for the future if needed. The fact that your neighbors are willing to make a phone call to the police over your chickens is rare these days.

They will have to buy feed eventually. Talk to the feed store to. Post a pic of them on the cork board there. It is hard to hide a live animal forever. Good luck and I hope you catch them.

Here is that birchen boy I am thinking about getting. He is only 4 1/2 months old right now. He has heavy silver lacing. So, should he make "okay" birchen females with my black hen? She has came from a pure black line and nothing else.

"pure black line" really doesn't mean much. it just means that all the birds are dominant blacks... there can still be a wide variety of other mutations hanging out under that black that will show up when crossed... like red for one. the only things you can guarantee a solid black to NOT carry are mottled and barring.

He's cool looking regardless, he looks like a mini silver sussex almost--granted he could probably walk under the sussex

Mmmmm.... Those are Birchens. He is only 4 1/2 so he has his juvenile feathers.

Wasn't that what you decided before? I think you already had feedback that told you that you'd end up with either all black birds or black birds w/ red/gold leakage.

By the way, you might want to take a look at their feet, they look black to me.
