Looks like it got the Cochin feet feathering for sure!

I have to say generally yes that bird will do well in a 4H show. I have seen birds that would do well at an open ABA-APA show be exhibited at some county fairs. You would never be embarrassed to exhibit a like that bird in 4H. My comments on shows is that you can never know if you have a winner because you never know what someone else will bring. I also know some 4H shows use judges of questionable experience level so whether you win or lose really doesn't matter a lot because YOU know what you have. Nice bird.
I think, as I was saying (here or another thread, I don't remember) that it's the melanizing gene AND the pattern gene that will give the spangling, and the mottling the white tip... not just melanizing and mottling, which is what calico had... and it also doesn't work if Columbian is present, otherwise you end up with mottled laced birds. what we've got now it seems, are mottled Columbian with melanizing. no pattern gene to put the black on every feather.A lot of my birds have darker hackles, even if they have no chevrons
Is this what you mean, though? To me it looks like Kiperu has darker hackles too? Just maybe not as much as Calico? I'm so Sorry about Calico![]()
And so, I've had Freaky running around as a yard bird, but he definitely has the darker hackles. I had planned on pairing him up with a hen who looks wheaten with a little mottling when I found the time, now I think I'm going to make that a priority.. &/or should I try him with anyone else? One of the calico-looking girls maybe?
Nancy I had given serious thought to breeding Reds, I have a frizzle rooster who looks like a Black Tailed Red or something close to it
and his daughter is a Red
I tried to add stock earlier this year via shipped eggs, but I haven't had any luck with shipped eggs at all this year. Maybe I'll try again with live birds - I've always loved Joanie's Reds, and MO is just a state away ~
Nancy, I can't tell how much spangling he has, but he is gorgeous and I just wonder if he could work in a red program. He definitely has the mahogany color that I think the reds need. Have you ever thought of breeding Reds?
MO = Missouri, Annamay![]()
I think Casey had plans to this year and then had terrible fertility along with working 6 days a week. I too had considered working with an almost extinct variety.If Annamay has Reds she would be a good person to get birds from and certainly easier than shipping from Maine, Annamay is also a real plethora of information on breeding for color and pattern. Keep in mind though Joanie's main focus is Reds and I think I saw a post recently that she is going to be doing her fall sales soon or maybe even now. That frizzle Black Tail should be in the hands of someone breeding them. They are EXTINCT I think or at least almost. There is someone who said they were going to breed them but dang it, I can't remember. Joanie, can you recall? Or maybe it was you talking about it.
