Cochin Thread!!!

Do you ever see any of your birds "play"? This cockerel will take off running and jump around like a frog seemingly for no reason. The other day I could swear he was playing with my dog. The dog was running in big circles and every time he came around towards "Groucho", the bird hopped at him in a non-agressive way. Neither was acting threatened. I will have to get a video of this big guy acting so goofy. He is very friendly too, follows me around.
He is beautiful. I hope Blueberry looks like him when his molt is done! He is only 7 months old. He does play sometimes, he talks all the time. He burbles constantly. He is also the sweetest cuddle bug. I love Cochins. Mine is LF is yours?

Mary Jo...Groucho is looking good. He is going to be a big boy!
He is such an active bird; got to go see what any squabble or fuss is about, runs around like an ostritch and jumps in the air like he is trying to fly. He rarely crows though. He is already huge, I can't imagine that he will get taller but of course he will fill out.

Thank you. Groucho does too! I can't believe how similar they are. Yours came from good breeding. Mine was luck of the draw farm store pick. I don't think I could get another like him if I did that again. It was a freak accident. Albeit a happy accident lol. This is his girlfriend... We got her the same day... Sorry I like posting pictures. I'm a new chicken mom.

Lavender at about 4 months
Starting to fill out this summer at 5 or 6 months. I don't have another good pick of her since she just brooded her first chicks and looks awful right now.
Blueberry at 4 months

Both of them at a few weeks old

The day we got them.

Do any of you not bother giving roosts to your bantam cochins? Mine are about 4 1/2 months old now, and they just pile into the corner under the hanging feeder every night. I have a "trainer" roost installed that is only about 10-12 inches above the bedding. I never had trouble getting my hatchery cochins to roost, but these better bred ones are stubborn! I really wish they wouldn't snuggle in the poopiness all night, since it inevitably gets gross there quickly.
yes, my cochins all roost... the higher the better for some.

Nice colors! You did get lucky-
I don't know of any farm store around here that ever has had LF Cochin chicks for sale.

I got them at BIG R. I'm not sure if you have that store. If they have them again next year, I may try again. I asked what hatchery they went through and they said Cackle. I had already gotten all the straight run chicks I wanted, and went in for pullets, then I saw the blue Cochin bin. Chicken math struck, and I didn't care. I did however limit myself to 2 of them, and ended up with a pair. Blueberry is my submissive rooster and never mounts hens, so breeding them my pose a challenge. I really want to though. You can't find large fowl Cochins around here. Let alone blue ones. Do you think I could try to show them? Or would I get laughed out of the poultry barn? lol
