Cochin Thread!!!

Do any of you not bother giving roosts to your bantam cochins? Mine are about 4 1/2 months old now, and they just pile into the corner under the hanging feeder every night. I have a "trainer" roost installed that is only about 10-12 inches above the bedding. I never had trouble getting my hatchery cochins to roost, but these better bred ones are stubborn!  I really wish they wouldn't snuggle in the poopiness all night, since it inevitably gets gross there quickly.

Mine are on regular roosts. Actually, their roosts are higher up than the LFs now that I'm thinking about it. The only bantams that I have that don't get on the roosts are the silkie girls. Fwiw.

i figured out the cause of the variation in my Partridge chicks.

The little one that is light coloured in the pic below is pure for Dilute, and also carries mottling.


Here it is now. Looks like a cockerel to me.




i found a great pic from Grant Breretons site (www.Poultrykeeper.com), showing the difference between partridge birds from the USA and the rest of the world. This pic shows the difference in colour, due to Dilute and Mahogany on two Partridge Wyandottes.

I must admit i prefer the richness of USA birds, and may try and work Mahogany into my birds at some point.

My roosts are about 2 ft off the ground. I put a milk crate in each run to encourage the kids to jump on the crate & then to the roost. It takes time but it works.

Blueberry is a great looking boy!

Groucho's father stands a full two feet tall and weighs in now at 15 pounds while finishing his molt. He was about 17 pounds in his prime at early summer. Big Blue, the Black and High Stepper and a rooster that Muesky has all hatched from eggs from Bo Garret 19 month ago. Bred to hens from Jheinz and CJarvis, the offspring have been gorgeous.

When I let them out in the morning, some of them are sitting on the roosts, so they know how to get on them. They'd just rather sleep in a pile. Silly birds...

He is beautiful. I hope Blueberry looks like him when his molt is done! He is only 7 months old. He does play sometimes, he talks all the time. He burbles constantly. He is also the sweetest cuddle bug. I love Cochins. Mine is LF is yours?

Very interesting Andy. What would you say is the base color on the dilute? They both have lovely feather pattern.

Thank you guys!. We love him. I am hoping to start breeding, but he is kinda girly. He has no interest in hens other than gossiping with them. Maybe in the spring I will see if he an Lavender will make some babies. I would love to get some B/B/S babies out of them.
