I just got my baby Cochins on Friday in the mail from Cackle Hatchery. 5 Splash, 5 Silver Laced, and 5 Gold Laced. Sadly one of the Splash and the extra chick (a GL) died in shipping and another of the Splash was not eating or drinking, just sleeping a lot. I just boiled an egg tonight and got him to eat a little and it made him thirsty so he braved the water dish after I dunked his nose in. (The splash ones think there is a monster in the water...its kinda cute :p) Hopefully the little guy makes it!

ANYWAY! Here they are! This is them at 2 days old. They will be 5 days old tomorrow.

Here are my bantam cochins. 1 black frizzled pullet- Ethel. 1 barred frizzled roo- Phoenix. 1 smooth blue roo- Steele. And 1 smooth silver laced pullet- Luna. I'm not 100% sure on her coloring being silver laced so any confirmation would be awesome! Also, I've read that blue cochins are rare? Is that true? I'm very new at this and got these babies from a local poultry farm. They're probably about 8 weeks now I'm guessing. :)

Here is a cockerel i sold a while back that i thought i would show here. I sold him to another breeder interested in breeding mottled partridge and Mille Fleur. The comb looks good, the wings arent high enough possibly.

Here is the very surprising progression. The boy hatched yellow and looked like a recessive white.

Then started developing partridge colours (on the right)

at the awkward stage, here we can see male partridge pattern comimg in.

Starting to look like the end product (on the left next to a normal partridge cockerel)

And a mature adult.

The boy is a mottled partridge, carrying Dilute gene, you can see it's action in the light hackles on the last pictures.

This progression should also help to show how difficult it is to predict the end product. Particularly when trying to develop a new colour as i am.
