Cochin Thread!!!

Pictures are helpful
It could be age
It may be a poor feathering gene or a mixed breed
All my Cochin have beautiful leg feathering.

That is just my experience I am not a breeder or professional on the breed.

Sorry if this is wrong, but from my experience, I have two Cochins who are sisters, and one has incredible feathering, and he other not so wonderful, so it could just be different from individual to individual, not necessarily cross breeding, as my chooks parents are both very nicely feathered, yet they are slightly different.

Hm. Interesting. Thanks for the insight.

Gene issue yes. my youngest blue doesn't grow foot feathers out as long as her two coop mates, but has the full leg feathers. Also you must keep in mind where they come from. Hatchery stock can differ greatly. My 1st cochin is lovely, fully feathered as she should be while her Brahma sisters do not have the full feathered legs and feet as they should. So if you are wanting birds for show do research and find breeders who stick to the standards. Yes you can pay more but your stock will greatly improve.

Hi everyone, so I went out and got five more LF Cochins this afternoon, this time from a breeder who keeps to standards and shows his birds, rather than hatchery stock like previous birds of mine, and I must say that the difference is astounding. They are only four weeks old so I can't be sure how they will turn out, but the parent stock was truly impressive. Now that I have seen in person how a properly bred Cochin looks I don't think that I'll ever stray from keeping Cochins

Definitely worth looking for properly bred birds over hatchery and I paid less for these than the others so it's not even necessarily more expensive.
The five I added today are: two white, two blackish, though there are white streaks in them, not barred though, looks suite interesting, and one lavender. Love the lavender, the colour just looks so soft that they look even fluffier and softer

Gwyllm, congrats on your new birds! Big difference huh? Where did you find them? Oh I too thought I had a lavender but she's a blue splash. She was light lavender as a chick then as she grew the blue came out. she is posted back a few posts. I wish you luck with yours!
