Cochin Thread!!!

I'm no expert...so take it with a grain of salt. I was pretty sure at 3 weeks that I had a roo because his feathering was far behind the others. He had naked shoulders, no tail feathers and tiny little wings whereas the others flight feathers all pretty much reached back to their bums. At 4 weeks I started seeing noticeable difference in his comb and now at 5 weeks it is turning pink. He also has very beefy legs! One of the "girls" may still surprise me tho!

At what age can you get a good idea of the sex of a cochin?

At around 5 weeks most Cochin roosters have pink combs. They also tend to feather slower, in the bantams at least.

Update on my little gal, she's 4 months and 5 days old today. She's an accidental cross of my English buff orp hen and my Blue Cochin roo

Funny, my sister in law just asked for some of my cochin (bantam) eggs, and I asked if she would like to also try some of my new chocolate orpington eggs, which could be fertilized by my blue frizzle bantam cochin. So maybe they will be a pretty cross.

of course you can never get them all into one picture lol. The barred guy is a surprise but I'm loving his look lol. He just makes me laugh looking at him. They are 5 weeks old today. Thinking I just have the one roo so I struck it lucky. So long as he gets along with my tiny bantam old English roo then he gets to stay.

I wasn't sure about getting a Cochin at first. They're absolutely gorgeous (and I love the feathered feet!), but they don't lay a lot of eggs for a backyard bird. Oh have I changed my mind!!

I sneaked 1 Partridge Cochin into my new flock this year as my "ornamental" bird and I wish that I'd gotten more! She's the sweetest little gal. A little shy around the other chicks and definitely near the bottom of the pecking order, but she's been the best little chick.

I'm so glad someone brought this up! I have 2 cochins, one 3 weeks and one almost 4 weeks. The older one just started getting a comb, still small and yellow but does a comb this early mean it's a cockerel?

I go by the color, in Cochin hens they stay yellow orange longer, after 8-12 weeks you can start comparing size as hens we start getting pink but still stay small.

Bantam cochins from last year, hen at the top rooster on the bottom at about 3-4 months of age for comb comparison.



Another one from last year at about 10-12 weeks who's obviously a rooster. He was naked except for wing feathers until almost 8 weeks.

That is very helpful! Mine are not bantam but I'm sure the same rules apply. I am glad I have an idea of what to look for.
