Cochin Thread!!!

Honestly, she looked that way when I got her. She came from a huge pen of many, many girls and two roos.
He does breed with her more than Suri though.

Looking through the thread, I saw a few Frizzles, so thought I would post as well.

Some of these Cochins have been making me

Suri needs to come live at my house!

I just picked this little guy up today. He's a real cutie, but I don't know what to do with him

He came home because I wanted the hen he was paired with. I think he is about 4 months old.

I have three partridge cochins ... and they are the least social of my flock. Granted, they are coming around *very* slowly. Is this a typical trait for them to be so shy?

I also noticed that they still have a good amount of chick fuzz. They are very slow maturing compared to the other breeds the same age who are fully feathered out.

The other two are so shy, I can hardly get pics of them. I tried for at least 20 minutes, and this one finally said "Fine ... take the d*@n pic."

I have only had my black cochin for a short time but I acquired her along with three other chickens and she is definitely the most skittish of the bunch and has been since the first night I brought them home. Just the other day when I had to pick her up so I could examine her (she had laid for the first time and they were two membrane eggs) I had to close her up in the coop and climb in there and even then she just kept trying to escape my grasp. It was funny but not funny, you know. I knew I just wanted to hold her and look her over but she seemed so afraid of me it made me sad to be doing it! She does come running when I come out to the yard and she will even follow us around talking to us but she just doesn't want to be picked up.

I purchased two bantam cochins from a backyard chicken breeder who's just starting out. They were six weeks old, and he was pretty sure they were pullets. One is lavender, maybe lavender splash, and one is black. Now that they are 12 weeks old, the black one has the beginnings of wattles and a much redder and larger comb.

What are the chances of that being just a well-developed pullet instead of a roo?

I've named them Ellen and Amy, and if necessary, I supposed Amy could be called Amos. Just a pic of Ellen, which I'm awfully sure IS a pullet, because "Amy" is too fast for my cell phone camera.

Once my cochins started laying eggs, their personalities totally changed. They were pretty shy, always ran away from us, but I encouraged my kids to not chase them and hold them when they could so they would get used to it. My kids would turn them upside down and they'd relax. BB, our partridge cochin, was the least skittish and the "bravest", and Vivienne was very shy and always ran away. BB started laying first, and she decided she was the Queen Cochin, and wanted attention for doing her good deed. A month later, Vivienne (a very large, fluffy girl) started laying, and the tables turned. Now, Vivi runs up to us to be held and to get a back rub, she's just like a cat. BB tolerates us holding her and does love a good back rub. Vivi lays larger eggs, and now shoos her sister away from treats and scratch, when it used to be the opposite. Who knew I'd be talking about changing chicken personalities! Many changes are in store for you, just be patient and sit with them-read a book or something, and they'll no longer think you want to eat them (at least not yet...)!

Well, my first batch of Bantam Cochins for 2010 are 5 weeks old tomorrow. I have three pegged as girls, one is a definite cockerel, two just started looking like cockerels in the past few days, and two are keeping me guessing. I have a whole "bachelor pad" for my extra roos, so I really don't mind if they're all boys - that way, I have a much larger selection to choose my favorite roo for breeding and getting some prettier pullets next year!

I guess I'll have to keep waiting and see!

I have two more chicks that are two weeks younger than these guys, and I'm pretty sure that they're a boy and a girl.

Here are some pictures of the 5-week-olds; what do all you Cochin experts think? (They're Columbians and two that I think are Silver Partridge? They were thrown by Columbian parents, some of whom might be split to Lavender, so you tell me!)

The Girls::

The "Little Man" - his comb has looked like this since he was two weeks old!:

The rest of them - the two Silver Partridge ones in the back I have pegged as boys, it's the two Columbians closer to the camera that I'm not sure about!:
