Cochin Thread!!!

I don't think that's a Bantam Cochin. Based upon length of leg and size in comparison to the water and feed dishes it looks to me like you have a Large Fowl Buff Cochin pullet. If it is a bantam it's going to be very leggy.

Cockerel options: Go with a Buff cockerel

Why do you want to cross the other varieties with a Buff?

Because those variations are what is available to me to choose from in my area...specifically one state over as she will bring him to me on the 17th.

I do not think she is a standard, if so she is going to be tiny compared to the standards I already have...they were both much larger at that age...but one never knows. She was an extra in a friends order and is supposed to be a bantam so I am hoping for sure that she is...

here are a couple more pics for size comparison for you...tell me what you think?

LMAO na he is only half Lab....the other half is Pyrenees so he watches over her. She is spoiled rotten and still in the house. She is such the Princess but she has no bantam buddies...my silkies and mille fluers are just babies.

I just want to find her company...I am not a breeder and they are pets only. But if I decide to incubate some eggs or if she goes broody, I was curious of the best color combinations. I would hate for Hera to have ugly children

You have to breed mottled to mottled to get mottled chicks. You may get 1 out of 100 mottled if you used a solid parent.

Awesome! Thanks so much! That's exactally what I was looking for! The eggs in the incubator are from you actually! I can't wait for them to hatch next week! I am really hoping for a splash mottled out of them!

chesselgesser - I HIGHLY reccommend thecochincoop!

Thank you and cochinman2005...I think what I am going to do is get a silver laced pair of bantam cochins instead of a bantam cochin cockerel and if, by chance, Hera is a bantam then she can go in with them. If not, she can join my 2 standard girls. I just got more info from the person I got Hera from and it seems she was part of a hatchery choice...but she so much smaller than the Orps and Cinnamon Queens, that the lady thought she was a bantam, so it is possible that she is a standard but just growing slowly. Either way I love her too pieces and she is staying with me, I just did not want her to be the lone bantam because my silkies will stay in pairs and trios.

Hey! What age did your LF Cochins start laying? My only girl is 19 weeks and I was wondering when she might start. Is it any different for bantam cochins? I have lots of those but they are much younger. Thanks!

At what age and what are the first place do you look for mottling? Isn't it a simple recessive? Wouldn't it be expected in 25% of the offspring of carrier parents?

I have 2 LF cochins...1 laid at 21 weeks and the other at 22 weeks. So it does not sound like yours are far off from laying. Average is around 20 - 24 weeks for most LF I believe. Look for their cobs to turn redder and they may start singing the egg song and checking out the nests right before they start to lay.

You can get it from carrier parents it is pretty much impossible to tell who is carriers and who is solid once you get past the F1 from a mottled/solid cross. It's better just to The babies in their first feather should have a tuxedo appearance when they are mottled.

rilly10 - thank you for the reccomendation
