I'm about 1 hr +/- north of the Tri-cities: Bay City, Midland, Saginaw.

I got my last cochins from a breeder near Jackson and IN isn't too far from there. Not this spring, since I think DH needs a break from chicks brooded in the house! But probably the year after I'd like perhaps 6-8 straight run chicks for LF partridge cochins to outcross mine on. DH hates our EE rooster and would love a few more nice cochin roos to replace him with

A mi esposo le encantan los "cochins" pero tenemos otros gallinas para huevos.

To answer the question of how one would/could create them, you'd have to go outside the breed. If I were going to work on Birchen Cochin Large Fowl I'd breed a Light Brahma Cockerel to a Black pullet. The resulting f1 birds should be Birchen for the most part. Select the best Cochin typed and best colored birds from the f1's and go from there. Ultimately the best bet would be to use two Black pullets so that you had some genetic diversity when you bred the f1's back to each other. You'll have comb issue for a few years, but I've seen large Birchens that came from this approach and they were quite good with good size and type. Keep in mind that Birchen Cochins are not recognized variety in Large Cochins.
