Cochin Thread!!!

Apparently breeding season is underway at Golden Feather Farm. I've save my first couple eggs, have lights on in two buildings and will turn the timers on a couple others this weekend once I get breeders moved around.

RE: the talk about the Cochins that are much smaller than they should be. Any time I may happen to get a "runt," that bird is culled. They aren't of any use in a breeding program, probably won't lay if they are pullets, and would pass on poor genetics even if you could get them to breed.

No eggs yet in Iowa . I did turn on the lights last week to see if I can get them to lay soon. Would love to hatch early enough this year to have the birds mature before the Crossroads show this fall.

Runtiness - We won't keep her for breeding, but she makes a cute showmanship chicken, she is the tamest cochin we have ever had, if you go in the pen she runs over to sit on your feet. My 9 year old can handle really well, (except for making cochins walk the table, I guess it's a California thing from what I have seen) My kids refuse to give in to the tread and do the OEGB's for showmanship, my 13 yr old is determine to make a LF Light Brahma one of his showmanship birds, should be hysterical!!!

Yes, my 'dwarf' was given for free to the family buying my other bantams.....they are all children's pets and for fun only. That little girl was the perfect size for small hands to hold and sweet enough for it to be the perfect match. I've had 2 other dwarves (1 related, 1 unrelated) and both failed to thrive and died. This girl did perfectly fine but was just really small. The kids that got her were in love before she even left the property.

She would definitely not have been breeding quality due to the "issue".

Mr. Ree :

I had mentioned earlier in this thread that I wanted to find some Red Cochins and work with that variety. I was surfing aroudn the internet earlier tonight and found these pics of Red Cochins from another country, although they seem to have similar standards for their birds there as we do. The male in the pic has to much black in his tail but the hen is very nice and the color on b oth is opretty good. This is what I would like to produce in the future.

~Casey

your best bet would be to import eggs, IMO, if you have the time and money. the hatch rates would be really low, but you could probably get 2 or 3 hatched out of 100, i know people in UK who had serama eggs sent from here in the US and they hatched 27 out of 35, so you never know
just seems alot quicker than breeding from scratch

Two of my bantam cochn splash hens are laying so I've fired up an incubator.

I got some silkie eggs, some buff orpington eggs and some button quail eggs from my neighbor Nancy to fill up the bator.

No use running it with just a few eggs that might not be fertile due to the cold and the season

Craig,
Keep in touch over the summer regarding whether you plan to show any Columbians at Crossroads. If you wind up showing some, I am sure I could add a handful to my entry to boost the numbers a bit.

Tom,
You can count on me bringing both Columbians and Blacks! I hope to enter at least 1 bird in each class/variety. I will continue to show Columbians at every show I go to. Maybe we will get more interest in that variety as more people see them.

Wow the hatching season has started early! Good luck to all!

Hello Everyone,

I am new to the forum. My daughter and I are starting a flock of chickens for her 4-H project, and she picked out Bantam Cochins. I think this breed has the perfect temperment for a child to learn to show. We have acquired some White Cochin and Partridge Cochin (all Bantam) hatching eggs, they just went into the incubator last night. I would like to get some cochins from another source to breed with these( assuming we have a successful hatch

). I would like to know which varieties I could breed these with, and is there a good place to go for breeding information related to cochins? Where should a newbie start? I grew up on a farm, and my favorite subject in college (I have gone back) is Biology, so I understand genetics, but I don't know which traits are dominant or recessive or share dominance. Thanks for all your help. Lisa
