Cochin Thread!!!

Cochin related question !

I have three pullets from September 2010 hatching. They all had very pointy tails at first. The smallest black one is actually looking decent right now. The blue is slowly getting rounder, but still has a pointy tail & the biggest black is getting rounder aswell. Will they slowly develop & get rounder as they get older? My smallest seems to be changing nicely.

I also had some blacks hatch out in September and October. Some of mine are showing good type and some need to develop soon or I will be culling them in about a month. Some of mine are not developing good type yet and I am giving them another 4-5 weeks then they will be culled

I contacted Judy and she didn't have what I was looking for

but I was referred to Jamie Matts in NY. He has amazing birds and is a poultry judge so he knows his stuff. I have a trio coming in March from him and I should hopefully start hatching this summer. I am very excited to have such great birds to start my project with.

I know Judy VERY well and have for years. When I first started showing years ago she was one of the breeders that got me going. Most all of my foundation stock I had came from Judy. Her Mottleds are some of the best around, especially on the East Coast. Judy is a great person and will help anyone out. Her health was not the best the last we talked right before Christmas, so if you try contacting her give her some time to respond as well. Hope you find what you are looking for. Good luck and best wishes to you.

I had a few that started limping at around 5-7 mths old. Some got bad and I culled them. We eat our extras so I checked out what the problem may be since I was in there (was a vet tech for almost 20 years). The pelvis was very wide and the hip bones could not support the body. One roo had a very shallow joint cup and the ball wasn't in the cup. I am very careful now to breed roos and hens when they are older in case this short bodied breed gets too short and round.

She has excellent birds. Sometimes it is hard to reach her but it is worth it when you get some. I had 2 hens from her and though I lost one the other is still here and producing well. Look at my website under Mottled bantam Cochins to see the hens.

If I raise Mottleds can I...

Just breed Mottleds to Mottleds?
Do I have to incorperate Black and Blue into my Mottleds?
Benefits of doing so?
Can I show Black Blue and Splash Mottleds?
If so do I enter them as Mottleds or like Blue Mottled?
Pictures of good Mottleding vs Bad Mottleding would be nice.
Thanks,
Matt

I raise all three colors and the genes are related. It is the andalusian blue. You can show all 3 colors but the blue and splash are not recognized and they would be in the aov class.
this is one of my blue mottleds. she has decent coloring. the mottling is supposed to be a v shape on the tip of every 2-3 feathers depending on where it is on the body.
