Cochin Thread!!!

I wonder if the plastic thing he is standing on is throwing off his balance and causing him to try and keep his balance...which is making him look low and long. Photo #6 looks the best body wise (he looks the roundest in that one).

ETA: I would take a picture looking down on him to show his width and then a couple of pictures without the plastic stand.

Thanks. What is Minkee fabric? It is a cheap fleece throw from Walmart.

The plastic thing is a CD case (round). Without it he just slumps down low like he's missing his lower half. You can't see his feet without him standing on it. I will try to get an aerial shot though.

Thanks for the critiques people, keep 'em coming. He is going to the Delmarva Show next weekend and I don't want him getting laughed at.

I'll do my usual preface that I don't know squat about chickens but am a licensed goat judge and I see the same thing in goats. It's VERY hard to properly evaluate an animal by photo alone. A good photo can make a mediocre animal look good and a bad photo can make the national champion look like it should be in the stew pot. And even a "first-hand" evaluation amounts to nothing more than an opinion. And remember that opinions are like a certain body part located on the backside. Everyone has one! Even judges don't agree when evaluating live animals. In goats, we'll often have two rings where the animals show under one judge and then move to a second judge and are re-judged. Basically , it gives you two chances to earn credit towards your championship in one day. The first two-ring show I went to years ago had a class of 16 goats that the two judges literally switched 1st and last place. (The other places were all over the place too.) It wasn't even a situation of looking different on different days as it was about an hour between the judging. They just saw the same animals quite differently.

Most of us that raise animals take pride in our work and while we may ask for critiques, most of the time, I think what people want is affirmation they're on the right track not that the next big BBQ is at that farm! <G>

Hi Stephanie! I first have to agree with everyone else - he looks better than the cockerel/roo I remember you posting pics of last year. Also, as with most everyone else, it can be uncomfortable when someone asks for a critique, especially about a bird they are already planning on showing. There's only a few people on this thread really qualified to critique show potential - and I'm certainly not one of them.

But here's my very novice observation on a couple of things that I noticed: the serrations on the comb are very uneven, and one seems to be leaning; in most of the shots, he appears long in the back, but then in a couple others it looks OK; there is come color leakage; and probably what stood out most to me is what JenEric mentioned, and especially your reply. You know that you're not going to be able to prop him up in the showroom - and it sounds like you already know his carriage is not good.

Oh no, I hope he doesn't get laughed out of the showroom....I thought I bought myself a good SQ pair from the Cochin Coop. But in their defense, these were the only 2 Splash they had left for sale.
