Cochin Thread!!!

Elinor's chicks :

Could someone tell me how to post pictures? I have them in 'my pictures' folder, but I can't get them here. I bought my first cochins, and I want to show you!

Of course we'd love to see your pics! Try this - go to your uploads, and right-click on the lower "image" link and "copy" the link. Then open a reply message, right-click again and Paste - the link should appear. Then scroll down and "preview" your post and see if the pic is there. If so, then just submit the post.

While we're on the subject. How do you all euthanize a bird when you just have no other alternative? I am so upset every time something like that comes up that I usually take the coward's way out and try to make the sick or injured bird as comfortable as I can until it dies. I really need some pointers on this.

the best way is to dislocate the base of the skull from the spine while severing the spinal cord. if you put your thumb at the base of the skull with your right hand and in your left hold the neck with your left thumb next to your right kind of do a break and pull motion. when I try this on baby chicks it usually pulls the head off so I just use scissors on them

forgot to add that they WILL flop and there is nothing that will stop this. it is just the way that their nerves and bodies are made

Thank you to all who responded. Less than I had hoped but more than I expected. Please consider joining.

Good point Craig. It would be nice if all of the Cochin enthusiasts joined Cochins International. As the most recent past President I can vouch that it's a good organization.

Also, the club is making a few changes. One of the things we've put in place is a new club forum. The link for it is as follows: http://showbirdbid.proboards.com/index.cgi

You
have to set up an account. Many of the breed clubs have their forums on the showbirdbid proboard site. Not trying to take anything away from BYC, but the focus of the Cochin Club forum is more along the lines of exhibition Cochins.

For CI members wanting to post pics over on the new forum on ShowBirdBid, it's actually very easy if you already have your pics uploaded here on BYC - you can use BYC as your photo host - you don't have to use Photobucket, etc. Just go thru the exact same procedures to post pics - right click on the image link, go to ShowBirdBid and open your post, right click again and hit paste. I was even able to copy my avatar from here. Sweet!

Thank You so much. I still don't know if I can do it but at least it gives me an idea of how.

The easiest way I can think of, and less painful. I put the bird in a box and run a vacume cleaner hose from my exhaust of the car into the box, I run the car for just a few minutes and it only takes less than a minute but at least they don't suffer any more. It's the least gory way I can think of. Just part of life and being a chicken owner and it's just something that needs to be done to relieve suffering.
