Cochin Thread!!!

Good morning

to all the cochin lovers! I just got back on this thread about a week ago after getting my computer problems fixed and things were a bit 'different' a week ago. I did get caught up in the tone of things ( I seem to let what others say influence me) and although I don't think I said anything to offend anyone I just want to apologize if I did say anything to offend anyone. I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings and sure hope I didn't. I try to get along with everyone and generally I am a nice person.
I will do my best to help keep this thread an enjoyable one for everyone and to focus on the love of cochins. And I do really like the people on here. It is good to know you.


PS wildwoodcochins I am not going to the show. Reyvaughn most of the pictures I cannot see, but the ones I can they are really cute. I think Byron and Lester look like a good start to your MF project. Those are the two I can see.

PS Talking on a computer can be tricky especially if you are not used to it. It is sometimes hard to understand the true meaning of what someone is trying to convey.

Very true! There is not much "tone" and expression with typing. Something said/typed with friendly irony, or anyother nuance, doesn't come across on-line.

Byron has white on his wing tips from being a mottled cross. Other than the tips, the primaries are black. See. now I had no idea the wings had a pattern to be looked at. I'll get pics of them as well. Just so I can learn something. I was going to take a pic of his wings while I had them fanned out, but mentally I thought that was going to far and maybe a little weird/obsessive, LOL! So, Byron has a high wing carriage? Beakman's is okay? And Beakman's tail is okay? I thought it may be a bit to narrow compared to the rest of his body.


@Wildwood - Indiana's a little farm for me. I am going to try going to the Uniontown, PA show next month. I want to experience showing and see if anyone has any Cochins they will let go (doubtful, but I'll try).

He is young. You would be surprised how much fuller he would look the day after a bath. If this is all the fuller he ever gets then yes it is not wide enough in back. The white I was talking about is wing tips feet and behind. Just too much white for a show mottled.

Now... Lay it on me... I am asking, because I am sure Beakman is not show quality, but maybe he's okay enough to add some type to my MFs that are lacking. Maybe I should post in the MF forum instead... What do you think of Beakman? And heck, what about Byron, too?

I know they are supposed to be a ball, both boys are alerted so they are 'long in the leg' as I like to call it. Other than that? Hows his wing carriage? His tail (a little to small and not full enough?), I know his comb is short a point or 2...

Next, Byron. He's my nicest boy... If that says anything. None of my birds have that round ball thing going on. -sigh-

They both have better type than my MF roos, especially Beakman's chest. My guys tend to have a "shovel" chest.

My cockerels are super sweet boys who will find treats for me!! They are love bugs and I don't tolerate rotten attitudes in my boys or boys who are rough on the girls. I

My big pen is on the site of an old garden and my Black rooster, Cowboy, finds shards of old cobalt glass for me.

Beakman, yes, he is decent. Could use better wing carriage but that is a fight I have in my breeding program, too. He does need better shape but he has a lot of potential and we all have to start somewhere.

Byron, I would not keep personally. The roo carries so much in a breeding program and I think it is important to have an awesome specimen. His shape is not conducive of getting you better offspring.

Just my opinion, take it for what it's worth. You know I say it honestly and not with any malice or jealousy.

I was out of town for a week and my dear DH, who is getting more and more interested in the flock, took care of them for me. He said the roos were defensive about their girls and the hens protested with pecks when he collected eggs. He noticed that after 4 or 5 days everyone calmed down when he interacted with them.
I love my hens and pullets. They let me pick them right off the nest when I collect eggs. Even if they are broody I can lift them off and count and mark eggs. I just love Cochin personalities.
I did have a Barred pair with a pecking roo. They have a new home with an owner who knows about the attitude.

Craig, is the feather pattern on the wings of the BC the same as that on the Columbians?

Really like the Buff Columbian! I love his color and pattern. Wing carried higher than the mottled but both are OK. How is his wing pattern?

I like the width on the Mottled. Too much white but he is so young that it doesn't mean much at this age.

Hope it is better than on most Columbians. Yes replace white with buff and you have the pattern

Rey, don't be discouraged, I picked up my new gorgeous Blue trio at Crossroads and one of the hens had just gone RV. Now granted I had to pay for them, but I've got them and they are gorgeous, plus they're just now starting to lay for the season. Soon I'll have little baby show winners running around. Just be persistent, you'll get some nice birds if you just hang in there.
