Cochin Thread!!!

Craig, I've got a few more Columbians and Buff Columbians. These were too young to make the trip, or just hatched from eggs that were incubating, so I'll get them to you somehow, maybe sometime this summer or at the National this fall.
You are coming to the Columbus National aren't you? Please, please, please

I'm going to guess the first two may be Golden Laced, the next possibly Buff and I don't know how it could happen, but the last one looks like a Self-blue. You said that they are hatchery, so that is why I'm guessing at the colors since I know they won't be the best examples, but I'm really surprised at the Self-blue. It can't be Blue because it is lacking lacing and the darker head.
Just a wild guess mind you.
i might argue self blue, as it looks like it's got buff colored feathers coming at the shoulders... and i thought only the blue (as in BBS) had the lacing, and that self blue was a nice uniform silvery blue color.

Yes, I agree and you're correct, only the Blues have lacing and should have a darker head than the body color, but if it's not an attempt at Self-blue, I don't have a clue what it is. That was the closest I could come up with. So what's your guess?

Here's a guess, it could be an attempt lemon blue in wwmicasa's version. Just a guess.

That or a trip into indiana this fall. Kind of depends on whether I have something show worthy. Wait that has never stopped me before! Did the partridge lay well this spring? I have only gotten 1 egg from them and1 from my Buff Columbian. The only birds laying regularly are my Silver Penciled hen and a Black pullet. I am looking for a Silver Laced Bantam rooster for a SL improvement project. I want the best I can find but will use a hatchery bird if necessary.

Thanks for the explanation Craig. Any idea of what color/pattern those top 3 may be?

Another question... Could a complete layman understand the SOP for chickens? I know that none of my chickens are show quality because they are all hatchery, but I'd like to get an idea of good vs bad. My concern is that since I know so little, I may not understand the terminology used or be able to figure out what they are talking about. Not saying that I'm an idiot or anything, but some things you need a working knowledge of before you can understand what "perfect" is.

Try the "Breed Standands" page on the Cochins International website: www.cochinsint.com

Then come back and ask your questions and we can help you as to interpretations of what they are looking for. If you get the Poultry Press, the Cochins International article this month is EXCELLENT! It is a reprint of an article written over 50 years ago, but it is simple and easy to understand, and still applys today.

ok well via PM i learned that the chicks are from Ideal. so that narrows down the list of options a bit more. so i'm likely to say porcelain d'uccle as it's the only thing close to that color that i can think of at the moment.
