Hi NanaKat!Not only do I use the toys and a mirror, I wrap a bottle of hot water in a soft towel. The single baby can snuggle bewteen the bottle and a toy for security. The mirroe makes it think it has a friend in there with it.

LilcrowGail, what a precious chick, I hope you flood us with pics, I just can't see enough little Golden Lace babies or any age GL of yours for that matter. I too love your brooder, how creative you are and I hope you get another baby soon. I use the feather duster and they appear to like it OK, but they are not fooled they know it's not Momma. I hate trying to raise a single chick, I spend too much time carrying it around and I get nothing done until another one hatches. If they start peeping I just can't leave them alone and scared, so I go pick them up just like I was with my own kids. I anthropomorphize entirely too much, it almost dictates my life.
Anyway, congratulations! You have a beautiful baby. I'll try to get some pics of my brand new Birchens, just 3 days old today and so far everybodies alive, even the little runt. There are 9 as of this date, with more in the incubator. I wish I was having as good luck with my Blues as I have been having with the Birch. I guess I'm going to have to get ruthless and really chop up there little butts
well, i'll pass along what i've been told.I just got another White Cochin delivered ( along with other babies) yesterday. This time its a boy( as long as I feather sexed correctly). I also have a 15 week old pullet so now I have a pair
Also, I have a question about my 15 week old White Cochin. She ( and the rest of the flock) likes to go under the trucks and porch and such to stay cool. Well she is filthy. Can I wash her? Is there a special shampoo I need to get?
Awesome, thanks !well, i'll pass along what i've been told.
yes you can bathe a chicken. you'll need... lots of clean warm water, mild dish soap, and vinegar (white), dry towels and a hair dryer.
i use our utility sink since it's roomy and the concrete floor getting wet isn't an issue. i fill the sink a little more than belly deep on a chicken, with some soap in the water to make it a bit sudsy.
put the chicken in, and soak it down well, adding a bit more soap as needed. i use a washcloth to get the feathers on the back and head wet, but make sure you don't get soap in her eyes, and don't let her drink it. LOL
when the bird is as clean as possible i set the water at about the right temp and just move the bird around under the running water while the sink drains and rinse all the soap off. then fill the sink again (once the suds are gone) and add about a cup of white vinegar to the water, and rinse her again with that. the vinegar helps cut any residual soap, so that when she preens the oil will actually stick to the feathers again.
then i wrap in a towel and hold them for a bit, and then use a hair dryer on low to fluff the feathers back out. especially under the wings and butt areas, as they seem to take the longest to dry.
an old toothbrush or other similar brush works well on the feet and claws for removing 'gunk' after she's had her feet soaking for a bit.
