Cochin Thread!!!

typically in cochins (so i'm told), pullets wings feather in faster than cockerels... but usually by the time they're 4 weeks old, you can see the difference in the cockerels' comb/wattles compared to the pullets'... i usually wait at least that long to decide who's who, before getting rid of any extras. but i'm hanging onto everyone until 8-12 weeks at least to assess how they're growing.

well they are not going any where for a while and just to the grand kids when they get the new house,
If this holds true would it be fair to guess Black #2 and Buff #3 and #4 are likely to be cockerals and the rest a good chance pullets?

That's funny the difference between the chicks feathering is really obvious whereas mine all seem to have the same length, I guess that could mean they are all either cockerels or pullets.

Well the two she thinks are Cockerels have names now, Black #2 she thinks is a boy and named Capone due to the little bald patch on his head and the teeny tinny buff boy #3 is Frodo the feather footed LOL he has the most feathering on the feet of any of them

Well atleast until we can tell for sure the sexes the names may change LOL

I'm doing lousy, lousy, lousy so far this year:

5/15 - set 14 eggs; 4 fertile; 3 to hatcher; 1 hatched; "Little One" died on day 7
5/20 - set 11 eggs; none fertile
5/25 - set 9 eggs; dropped one candling; other 8 not fertile
5/30 - set 6 eggs; none fertile
6/05 - set 5 eggs; none fertile
6/10 - set 5 eggs; 2 are fertile!!
6/15 - set 6 eggs; 2 are fertile!!
6/20 - set 4 eggs

I have 7 hens, but I'm only breeding 5 of them. It's going to be a long, hot summer . . . So I'm just going to sit back and enjoy everyone else's until things pick up here.

These two little ones hatched yesterday and this morning - over 24 hours apart. These are the first of my F2 Blue Laced Red project. They appear to be (genetically) right on track - 50% black (GL) and 50% blue (BLR).

Oh Gail, they are SOOOO cute, I can clearly see the blue in you BLR baby. I want so much to focus on my breeding for the early part of the season, but this surgery has really taken the sap out of me. It has been so much worse than I could have imagined.
Love, love, love you're little ones and really looking forward to seeing how your project baby develops. What fun!!

Just found this thread so thought I'd join in and share a pic of our mottled cochin bantam. Of course until a couple of weeks ago we didn't even know he was a cochin. Lol. We've got a lot to learn. He is 3 months old and named Moonshine. Until a couple of weeks ago he was the sweetest and friendliest bird we had. Now he bites everyone and challenges everyone. It's a pain in the neck. Any ideas why he changed or is that just a rooster thing? He's in a yard with two other bantams, 14 regular sized birds and 6 turkeys (who are scared of him) but at night the bantams have their own pen. The big birds leave him alone unless he challenges one of them.

I am really suprised that he changed so suddenly! Is he the only roo? If not, he might feel as if he needs to be the dominant one, now that he "feels" like a real rooster. Any one else care to add?

You need to work with him constantly/daily before he finds himself in the soup pot. Every time he challenges you, you must be the alpha. Pick him up, hold him close, cuddle him, talk to him, until he calms down completely. Give him treats while you cuddle him for his good behavior. You must do this every time he challenges you.
