Cochin Thread!!!

Can you really tell so early the males from females? These are 2 1/2 weeks, almost three.

We just got these four Cochins yesterday. Three little silkies cuddling in there, everyone seems to be getting along just fine.
no guarantees, but i think the black at the far back and the self blue(?) at the front right are cockerels. the other 2 kinda hard to tell. you'll know better in a few weeks i'm sure. 8)

i sold a pullet at about the same age to a friend, and (s)he is developing more comb now... so millie may be miller (hubby likes milton better) LOL

edit: *Bulldogma, why not post a newer pic?

Well here are my black bantoms kind of washed out photos but what is going on with the color coming thrue?

Here is the one with the copper streaking and under tone,

Hare is the one with the silvery grey streaking,

So what would you call this coloration in these two?

Well, it seems everyone has a different opinion. Part of the fun with a straight run is the wait and see.

My SOP is still packed away from moving a long time ago, but I'm pretty sure that shorter and broader is better for the beak. If a bird has a long, narrow beak it would contribute to the dreaded "crow head" look. Of course I could be wrong about that and would welcome a correction from any of the experienced breeders.
The standard does say that a Cochins beak should be short, and broad. Like you just mentioned, a long narrow beak gives the bird a "crow headed" appearance, which is no good for Cochins.

You asked for it - LOL! OK - so ki4got said her hatch date was about June 26th. These pictures were taken on July 29th making this chick almost 5 weeks old. Pullet or Roo? What's your guess, folks?

Regardless of gender, right now this chick is the sweetest lap chicken ever!

and on another train of thought all together, if i wanted to breed a cochin, to a non-cochin, to do some color cross (genetics) experimentation, what is a good color to use on cochins, that's NOT an overly dominant trait? this would simply be for a color project, not for breed or type.

i have no idea what goes into the solid color varieties, so don't know if say, a solid white would be good, or maybe patridge, or something else... i'd rather not use my blacks, since that seems to be dominant and would put me further behind, not ahead.
