Cochin Thread!!!

OK update on our Bantom Cochin chicks,
we had our buff "looking like a pullet" get her head caught in the wire where the corner of the growout pen was and we did not see it in time and lost her unfortunately.
The other 4 are doing phenominal!
Our buff still seems to be staying buff but the three blacks are getting some copper and silver showing up!
from initial pics and feather sexing and how they were feathering in it looked like Capone was our only cockerell but now I am not so sure!?!?
Well here are some quick pics from this morning and maybe you can tell me if I am seeing things or did it turn out all but one are cockerells!?!?

I am also interested in their coloring and what you think these will look like when they are adults, we only plan to keep a pair to breed and the rest for the laying pen unless they turn out to be three cockerells and one pullet

Capone, this is the one that thru wing feather sexing at 2 days old looked cockerell, is feathering in slower "still has baby fuzz' and has the bald elbows and is the smallest of the chicks. he also had a nice red comb a week ago where the rest were still yellow. "Staying no mater what! he was hatched with the bald spot and it never feathered in, most likely will be a grandkids pet"

The one on the left still looks like a pullet to us and is one we want to keep for sure, she has some nice rich copper coming in and has the sweetest personality! This one would be one for the pair to raise more. "As sweet as she is I would hate to put her in the laying pen!

The one on the right was looking to be a pullet until all of a sudden its crest started getting bigger and over the last week started to get red now we are confused!
If it is a male we will keep it to go with the copper girl as it has silver coming in with the same patterning as the copper in about the same quantity as well.

Finaly the remaining buff, we also thought pullet on this one but as with the silver started developing a comb that is reddening up as well.

Thank you for any input on these guys

Here is our 3 Cochins. My daughters picked them out at the feed store for mother's day. Not a fancy breed, but so far they are my youngest daughters favorites because they are gentle enough for her to get close and hold.

I love the cochins and am hoping to be able to get a few more next year to add to the flock!

Peep. Chirp. Fanny and Tiara.

I imagine the chicks will get more color as they grow older. The 2 standing in the food dish certainly looks like a boy and a girl. I have had that phenomenon with some black silkies. The girls had a gold tinge on their neck and some of the boys have silver.

My little group of LF Cochins are now 6 months old and laying!! These pullet eggs are about the size of my bantam cochin eggs.

Even though they are so much larger than my bantam cochins, they are very sedate and the rooster has yet to give me any sign of aggression :)

When my little EE bantam went broody, I picked out two one day old chicks from a local breeder since I don't have a roo. One of those babies - now 14 weeks old - is half Cochin. She is huge. At 14 weeks she is already bigger than my year old Australorps and Brahmas. She is very attached to me and prefers that I feed her out of hand. They were hand raised since the bantam kicked them out of the nest. I love her personality and looks and may consider getting more Cochins if this is typical of them. This is my first encounter with them and must say I've been won over after being partial to Australorps for so long. The other baby that I got is an EE and does not have nearly the personality of my half Cochin. Is this a norm for them? She is half Cochin, half SLW and very striking with her large yellow feet and combination of black/green/black and white feathers.

that is also (to my understanding) the difference between birchen and brown-red... add silver to the brown red you have birchen.

Hi everyone! I finally had a spare moment to take a few pics of my new little Cochin girl, Pidge. It was hard picking out a name for her. We went from Matilda to Melody, then from Ms Piggy (stuffed herself so full she hurled when I picked her up) to Pidge. We finally picked Pidge because it still had elements of the Piggy but also fit her total personality better (Pidge from Harry Potter; at least I THINK that's what Rons owl was named. Good natured spaz). Sorry for the resolution; took the pic with my phone and she wouldn't sit still for longer than two seconds.
