Cochin Thread!!!

The reason he looks like that is in fact because of gender. He looks like a cockerel, and cockerels usually tend to mature rather slowly as compared to pullets. He should fill out nicely in a few more weeks, nothing at all wrong with him.

Ok heres a follow up to what you said...if he is indeed a Roo, then should I assume that the three others are pullets? Those in the pic are the first four we got, and after thinking we might have 2-3 Roos, we went back to the breeder and picked three more that look more like pullets. With Smoke being the only one feathering so slow, does that mean he's the only he? Any insight is helpful.

That is probably a fair assumption that the others are pullets if they all hatched out at the same time. I agree with Casey's post.

My birds thoroughly enjoy being handled and rubbed on. I have birds that do what was mentioned and peck me from time to time. A peck and a bird being aggresive are two very different things. They may be comfortable enough around you that they arent going to submit to you like a bird lower in the pecking order might, hence the peck from time to time. When a bird squats, that is not because she enjoys being rubbed and petted, it is a natural reaction, that is the same thing she does when a rooster mounts her for breeding. The thing to remember also is that chickens, like all other animals, have their own personalities. Just because 50 people have the same exact breed, doesnt mean that your going to get 50 people telling you the exact same things that the birds they have have done. My birds sound almost complete opposite of the above post. Chicken or not, if they didnt enjoy it they wouldnt fly into your lap at every given chance or follow you around like a lost puppy. I have several birds I can put to sleep, just by stroking them softly.

I agree, if the bird is sqating then it ushualy doesn't like being stroked

Although it may be that they're not actualy sqating, I have 3/24 realy friendly chicks, thay always jump on to my lap when I sit down, the 2 pullets laydown when I stroke them if that's what you mean and fall asleep, the cockerel doesn't lay down but likes to be gettly petted.

I also have a hen who's 20 weeks that hasn't started laying yet, she used to be as friendy as this 3 but now when ever I go to pick her up she runs away squaking, so reading some of this I hope she will get more friendly again once she has startes laying

Thanks for all the help, Meredith

Your argument while admirable is not very valid. There are no variations of black, white, red, buff or other "self" colored birds but there are two variations of blue (Andalusian Blue and Self Blue). Andalusian blue does not breed true and produces three variants of color one of which is blue laced with black, whereas self blues reproduce themselves 100% true when bred together.
If there were varieties of blacks such as Jet Black, Beetle Green Black and Self Black then the argument would hold more validity but since these varieties do not exist the argument finds little merit. Much like Craig stated, everyone is entitled to their opinion and I certainly have one where this is concerned. The associations need to work towards uniformity on this and require names to adhere to a certain "Standard". This was not the case in the past and that is why we have Light Brahmas and Columbian Wyandottes, Rocks, Leghorns, etc.... These inconsistencies in nomenclature tend to confuse those new to the hobby and while I am used to them after several decades in the hobby, I would like to see some consistency in naming varieties legislated from the associations.

Blessings,

Bo
I really appreciate your thoughts and input on this. Your answer was very much what I was thinking. I could not put my thoughts into words in as clear and thoughtful way. Thank you.

I have a super nice pair of reds that need a breeding home for anyone that actually wants improve the variety. The shipping is $70 and we can negotiate price. I will be culling soon and these are way too good to go to a swap or mixed flock. Please email me if you are interested
I also have quite a few buff columbian cockerels that will meet the chopping block if anyone has any interest in those

I HATE that I cant get this pair. They would be great for me, but I cant afford anything at the moment. Room is no longer an issue, recently demolished an old barn and have plans to use the lumber to revamp my coop, and add onto it a little more.

Couldnt help but share this picture, I knew you guys would enjoy it. This is a pullet I had planned to sale, she is very nice but her feet arent as yellow as I would like for them to be. Well, she is always one of the first birds to greet anyone at the coop, and will not allow you to be around her and you not acknowledge that she is present. This bird is a hoot, and I dont think she is going anywhere, my Grandmother LOVES this bird. This picture, to me, really shows how tame and docile she is.

(Excuse my ugly mug. Especially the scruff, its been a while since I have decided to shave. Lol)

Here is a picture of her, and a couple pics of her and another pullet I have who CRAVES attention.
