Cochin Thread!!!

After fighting with this computer for 3 hrs, I finally managed to get the software for my camera installed and pics on here so I wanted to post a few.

These are of 2 birds, 'Super Mario' is the cockerel and he is my nephew's bird. The pullet is one of the best I raised this year. Hope you guys enjoy.

I have a Cochin Frizzle Bantam pullet that I've taken to a few shows. At the County Fair, she won Best of Breed and Best Variety. Sweetest little thing, I also won Grand Champion in Showmanship with her. She has really nice confirmation, and I'm taking her to a big show next month. I ordered her through my 4-H group from someone named Dwanye Earch or something like that. Anyone know who is? I'd love to see some of the other birds he has.

Casey they are very gorgeous!

BantyChickenLuv Duane Urche will sell chicks or hatching eggs next spring (I think Jan-May). He has about 100 breeds. Pm me if you want his phone number. ( If you look in the Strombergs catalog of the show birds offered you will get a fairly good idea of what he has, but not exactly)

I believe your talking about Dwayne Urch. Have never seen any of his birds personally, but have always heard great things about them. If I am not mistaken, he is also a judge.

Craig,
Glad to see the coons left you some beautiful birds! Keep us posted as to your findings regarding who yellows in the sun and who doesn't? What about feed? Do you keep them away from yellow corn?
All of this years Columbians have been in the sun and show some slight yellow on shoulder and wing bow area but the ones I have culled had much much more. Hoping to let nature tell me where my problems come from. I was able to cull those younger than I would have culled birds that good last year. I don't know any other way to eliminate the off color white on these birds. The hens may carry it but it doesn't show so I am making it show and culling them as pullets and cockerels hoping that I get that out of the breeding pool. It does mean getting rid of some birds of pretty good type.
No the feed they get in Iowa has plenty of yellow corn in it. If fact they LOVE cracked corn as a treat. I do not give much when giving as a treat. Except for 1 buff Columbian pullet all I have that are over 8 weeks old is about 7-8 Columbians. Still growing out more. I have set every fertile Columbian egg laid here since March this year.

I am in awe of the work dak is doing with her LF and the progress being made. With the price of feed that is commitment knowing how slow LF grow.

Thank you both tiki244 and Mr. Ree. My whole 4-H ordered around a total of 75, 50 LF and 25 Bantams. I haven't ever seen any of the LF birds, but we had nice Bantams and not so nice Bantams. First off, my Frizzle, who is indeed a Cochin, lays almost pure white eggs, not tan. Also, a Partridge Bantam Cochin someone else got from him doesn't have the nice Cochin ball tail, it hangs very low, and the bird doesn't have much of a comb. The roo I got from him does have a comb, but the points aren't Cochin-like, more like RIR. And chicks that the group got for him died for no obvious reasons... So I guess it's kinda a win-win situation.

Lets not talk about feed prices.

It makes me want to go home and prematurely CULL! I do think I am getting a feel for what can be culled for early though. Certain things don't get change or get better.

Craig, I like hearing your comments on the columbian birds. I have some Light bantam Brahmas and yellowing is an issue for them also. I think having columbian birds around is helping me understand that component in the laced birds. Especially, as I try to decipher these partially laced birds from the GLC split x split breedings. Next year will be fun trying to get the lacing back 100% while maintaining the type improvements. I believe I will split to Black again. It is scary, but is a numbers game. Maybe, I'll have a GLC worthy of ch. row in a decade or so.
