Cochin Thread!!!

. This is a friend of mine blogspot I wanted to post. She works all the time. She just added some pictures of her blue and splash bantam cochins. Thought some of you might want to see them. It is a very nice blog> http://autumnbreezechickens.blogspot.com/

OK I guess it is ok to post this number as it is pretty much public knowledge > Duane Urch phone number is> 1-507-451-6782 call only between 7-9 pm CST which means in Oregon 5-7pm I believe. (There is also information in the back of the BackyardPoultry magazine in classifieds. ( I have some brown red modern game bantams I got from him two years ago~thttp://www.backyardchickens.com/t/710863/biggest-smallest-baddest-rooster-prize-ends post 21) I have seen some LF BBS cochins that looked nice from him
He was also one of the few (if not the only)that brought back the Java. He is judging at our small show the first weekend in October.

I posted quite a few pictures on the Mille Fleur thread, but I wanted to share some of my favorites here too

Recently I posted about having calico cochins and was told that was not an accepted color. From the decription about I see now they are mille Fleurs. Is this an accepted color? I have the standard of perfection and I'm still trying to wrap my head around colors and patterns!! If the MF are not an accepted color/pattern then what was mated to produce this? Trying to learn here in GA....

MFs are not an accepted color, it's a project. If you head over to the Mille Cochin Info thread, you can learn more. Most of us use buff columbian x mottled crossed birds. Some have introduced partridge to their mottled. Lots to learn from.

Thank you. I will take a look. When they call this a project does that me that the breeders are working towards recognition or just enjoying the variety of new colors? I'm a boxer breeder and am enjoying the difference in the direction that chickens breeders go to keep and create the different breeds.

We should clarity a couple of things for those that do not have an SOP:

1) Mille Fleur is a recognized and standardized Variety - meaning that there is a written standard description which you must breed to, and by which your birds will be judged.

2) Calico is NOT a recognized or standardized variety - there is no written standard description to breed to, or be judged by.

3) The Cochin Breed does not (currently) recognize Mille Fleur as an accepted Variety. You can show your Mille Fleurs, but they cannot achieve a higher win than Best of Variety.

Calicos are sports that arose out of the Mille Fleur projects. Many people prefer Calicos. Calicos do not have the defined trademark MF chevrons (black bar in front of mottled tip). They are generally a whiter and softer color - with much less black. The birds in the above post would be considered Calicos.

Hope that helps.

I have a question about black. I have two guaranteed Roos, one is 9 weeks the other is 11. The 11 week has dark grey fuzz still, and his feathers are almost laced looking, with grey on the inside and lined with black. My 9 week old is black black, and has this beautiful green sheen, that I swear looks purple sometimes. What's up with the difference in colors? The 11 week old is the one I was worried about feathering slow, he's finally getting more feathers in, but I honestly have no idea how he'll turn out. Any ideas?
