Ok here's the nine week old. If purple is bad then he has a major problem...good thing I didn't want babies huh?

And here's Smoke. He's 11 weeks and has been my fav since I picked him at two weeks.

Just wanted to say, for me, these Cochins are really just "lawn candy" :D so, the odd imperfections are ok with me...like the purple, never saw that come'n. In the sun Smokes black outlines in his chest shimmer green, which is super pretty. Thanks for any guesses on Smokes color. His back feathers aren't in fully yet, so unlike the others he doesn't have the fluffy hump, I wonder if he will at all?

"Smoke" is a Blue; the younger is a Black.

hey boys and girls i have some questions for you! i recently bought 6 standard cochin chicks from a local breeder and am kind of entertaining the idea of showing one but not sure if they can really be evaluated at all at this age. i believe they hatched around september 5th or 6th. the ones with the most feathering are my 3 barreds, 1 laced and my white.

sassy

cotton

lace (i am not really sure what color/pattern she is...because it looks like backwards silver laced)

(slightly older pic than the ones shown above that were taken today) Sass, Poker, Frass & Cotton (beaks were injured not sure how it happened but are healing nicely)

thoughts?? who do you think i should try to show ? and what color /marking/ pattern is the chick Lace?

Looks to be a Silver Penciled from the pic, but not sure as that is not a recognized variety in LF. As far as critiquing them, they are still way to young for that, they wont be ready for that until at least Spring.

Thanks. Is it weird that Smokes feathers are coming in so slow? The other three his same have beautiful fluffy feathers coming in, is it weird that his aren't? Or is it just because he's a he?

More than likely, its because of his sex and his size. LF Cochins tend to take a bit longer than most birds to feather in. Dont think you have anything to worry about, just give him a few more weeks and he will have plenty of feathers.

It's way too early to determine their level of quality - especially because they are LF. In the bottom picture, the chick at the left looks to have darker feet - are they willow? That's one thing to watch for at this age. I have Golden Laced, and I have had some start with reverse lacing like yours - so I'm thinking maybe it's a Silver Laced.

I love your birds Craig! My little ones from Dick are just about 5 months now. I have 2 girls that I kept that look pretty good just need work on the color pattern but they type is pretty good. At 5 months old I guess they will change a bit more but not sure. I have 3 roos the same age not sure which one to keep yet.

Thank you for the compliment.
All Columbians need work on the pattern. I believe it is quite easy to get them lighter or too light but quite difficult to get them darker where I feel they need to go. It goes with having Columbians. I have made a choice to breed and keep the darker birds this year trying to get a better pattern in the long run. When I started culling the 1st year I was Emailing Tom all the time with questions. It was a huge help to have a person to go to when I had questions and that made me more confident in my decisions. If you have questions about any of your birds PM me and or send pictures and I will gladly try to give my input. My first though is to keep 2 males because if you only keep 1 it will surely die over the winter. Look forward to seeing your birds.
Craig

One additional thought is that someone I trust about poultry information told me that shafting does not get better as they age. If you are looking at 1 factor for culling that is 1 that will not get better with age or additional molts shafting is one to consider.

Here's one of my Golden Laced from 2 years ago - started out with "Reverse" lacing on the breast, but a bit farther back, you can see laced feathers on the wings.

Thank you, I do tend to worry
Now I will go back to quietly enjoying all the pictures.
