Cochin Thread!!!

Cochins, in particular Bantams, aren't known as a production breed. They are know more as an Exhibition breed, and selecting for type should be foremost. IMHO
I could not agree with you more.

Casey, LOVE LOVE LOVE your coop!!! Love that look, did you repurpose that building from something else? Also, I have a question on your fence.....do you find your cochins stay in the shorter fence like that? Right now I have the tall 6' kennel panels but would love to get by with the 4' panels if I could in the future.

I actually built the coop around 8-10 years ago and it had press wood as siding. Had planned to get metal siding for it, but when someone tore down an old barn and asked if I wanted the siding I took it and put it on my existing coop. I also have some metal roofing from the barn I plan to put over the shingles. All in all, it cost me about $20 to revamp my coop, and it looks pretty good. As far as the fence goes, I had the chicken wire on hand already and had been using it as a makeshift run. I had planned to just put it back like I had it, and my mom and sister decided they thought it would look better if the run was held up with wooden posts and not metal ones, so I added the run onto it like you see now. For the most part, my birds just stay inside the run, havent had any problems with anyone getting out, or trying to.

With all the discussion of shows. Can anyone tell me when the next show will be near the Atlanta, GA area? Is there a website that contains this info?
http://www.poultryshowcentral.com/ This site has shows broken down by regions and states as well as contact information. I know there is one coming up on Nov 24 in Dalton GA then more after the first of the year. There may be some in Bama that are as close.

Yes, I have lemon blue. I got mine from wwmicasa1 and will start hatching next year. I also have mille fleur , blue, blue mottled, mottled, and splash. All in Cochin Bantams. He has a mottled chest but I don't think he has golden laced in him. He hatched out of lemon blue's. His father is beautiful as is the rest of wwmicasa1 (lynne's) flock is.

I'd love to hook up with you in the spring and see what you have. I got my stock from Jamie's Cochins in Harpurville, NY. He is a poultry judge and judges all over the country. I was fortunate to purchase 2 roos and 3 hens (all brown/red) from him. Really nice man with hundreds of Cochins!!!!

I'll have to find him. I'm focusing my breeding on lemon blues mainly but will have some brown reds. We defianatly should meet up. :)

I just printed my application for Cochins International. It states that membership runs from Jan. 1- Dec. 31, should I wait until December to send in my application?

I also went to the American Poultry Association's website. The 2010 Standard Of Perfection goes for $59. How often do they update it? Should I just buy an older one on ebay much cheaper and wait for the new one?
Thanks
Tony

Tony, I wasn't sure if you got an answer to this yet or not. I emailed the Membership Chairman, Matt, and he told me that he uses October 15th as a general guideline to give full membership credit for the new year. I hope that helps.
