Cochin Thread!!!

When you say you "flushed it with VetRX every day I cleaned it", you're not talking about the eye are you?
No, it will be her sinus cavity. Sterile eye drops work just as well, probably better since you can squeeze them out easier. Just take the VetRX or sterile drops and squeeze them into her nostril on the side effected, it will clean it well, and rid her of anything she may have lodged in there causing this if it isnt a sinus infection. Best of luck!

From materials on a truck to building up in less than 9 hrs. Tomorrow I HAVE to wash birds for the show this weekend! This will be my new Cochin shed when I get it finished on the inside later this fall.

Good, that's what I thought. I did that last night, I'll check on her again as soon as I go outside. See if it made a difference.
Thanks Casey!

Wow, that is going to be an amazing cochin building! I was talking to my husband about how I can't wait to move somewhere with a separate heated pole building for my home Etsy craft business. He was like oh sure, tell me it wouldn't be filled with cochins as soon as we moved in! I couldn't argue that...

I'll be re-setting my cochin pens soon, for blue (bbs) and mille fleur, and just hatched out 5 silver laced, 2 red, 1 buff barred and 1 partridge. disappointed on buff barred, but can always cross to awesome type buff if i want. the partridge i'm kinda hoping is a roo. then i can put him over my 2 blue partridge girls (if i ever take them out of my mille pen - 100% fertility and 100% hatch lately from these 2 girls!)

Ok, I feel extremely stupid asking this question but what color eggs do Cochin bantams really lay? Breed standard says brown but when I do a search on Google, I also find white eggs that are claimed to be Cochin eggs?
How much do the egg colors vary?

Mine lay white, "pink" and light brown eggs. But I have standard cochins. I'm not sure which hen is laying the "pink" eggs.

I love this picture I took yesterday. Looks like he's saying
"I am lion, hear me roar!"
Nancy, I love him!!! The two calico boys are doing well, one more week of quarantine and they get to graduate to the outdoors on a hopefully nice day! The wind has been terrific here and it is so cold today.
I had the hatchery bantam cochins until just a week ago and never had a single sick bird in about 6 years. Are the ones bred for showing more prone to have problems? Can anyone refer me to a good source of information for what sorts of meds/supplies I should have on hand for treating my chickens for the most common ailments?
I don't think my non hatchery cochins are any less hardy than my hatchery layers. They are in my opinion so far pretty tough little birds. I would google chicken first aid kit or look up on here and I bet someone has made a list of things to have in case of emergency.
Things that come right to my mind are electrolytes, probiotics, blu kote, vet rx, styptic powder or corn starch to stop bleeding, vetwrap, gauze, a couple kinds of broad spectrum antibiotics and something for pain. My DH is a vet so I have banamine and metacam for my birds but I have read of using baby pain relievers too. I bet there are some great threads that can help you put together a first aid kit.

Would love to see pics of how you set up the inside when you get it done. We are looking at a property that has a barn on it to buy that I would love to house all my bantams in but some ideas on set up would be fabulous!

Nice looking batch of babies!! I love baby cochins. I wish someone was laying right now so I could set some eggs but everyone is taking a break. I am going to have to AI my BBS pen because all the eggs I set this fall were not fertile so that boy obviously needs some help. I even tried plucking but it didn't seem to help very much then the girls quit laying.
