Cochins passing pure blood - Cocci Kills

Not unheard of for birds to be fine where they grew up and then come down with coccidiosis when moved. I lost four, 3.5 month old pullets to that exact thing, I was completely shocked and baffled. By the time I saw bloody stool it was too late for the Corid to save them. I didn't know about dosing orally or I may have been able to save them, hard telling. There are a few different strains of cocci around.

To the OP- Could you please tell us if your chickens have eaten any red cabbage, beets, beet tops, tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries, or anything that may have had red food coloring in it?

Also, could you place these chickens on some white paper towels so the poop will be a more accurate color than it is on yellow shavings? Then snap a couple of photos up as close as you can and still have it be in focus using the "full size image" when you post.

The poop pictured on the wood shavings is both too small to afford a close look, and the poop pictured is more purple to my vision than the color of blood. While it very well could be blood, having another sample on white background would give us a better look.

They have eaten nothing of the sort. Only chick crumbles.
In person the poop is bright red.

They both look and act completely fine besides the blood.
Looks like coccidiosis to me...

Problem is they can suddenly die from too much blood loss... even though they "look fine".

If the rest of the flock isn't even with them... I would not be treating. If they are all together treat everyone with the higher dose and yes starting over. However it works by depriving the coccidia of thiamine, so I would NOT dose with vitamins at the same time.

I contacted the seller. She is not having this issue so I think they picked it up here.
How long have you had them? Coccidia are in every chicken poo. coccidiosis happens when they ingest too many sporulated ocysts ( microscopic eggs).
Hope you see quick recovery! :fl

Please don't hate me for this bc I know it's going to sound very "know it all-ish" and I swear I'm not a know it all. I just wanted to share this info bc I honestly didn't know the difference until I took a microbiology class. So please guys don't get me for this. Just thought the curious minds might appreciate it. But cocci & coccidia/ coccidiosis aren't the same thing. Cocci refers to bacteria and coccidia is/are parasites. Again I promise not trying to nit pick I just wanted to point out the very big difference and that the two aren't used interchangeably (to my knowledge). It could also get confusing if researching how to treat one condition but you use the name for the other.
