We are in UK. With a naked eye looking behind the cockerel’s ear lobe it looks like greenfly sized insects grouped together.
When I enlarged photo it looks like it could be natural markings. They do bump up unlike the markings on the edge of his earlobe which is also on the photo and on the front surface of his earlobe ( no photo) when the pattern is smoother and more of a blotchy water colour looking.
If these are insects they are under his skin and seem to be still not moving.
I’m seeking reassurance that he hasn’t got something.
We’ve recently had a red mite infestation so we are being super diligent. Thanks

I saw another post with similar pictures, some of the experienced chicken keepers said its caused by excess calcium.
Thank you. That is possible since he shares the layers pellets with the females first thing in the morning. (6:30 - 10:30) after which he has choices of roaming garden to find food or joining in with a breakfast mix of various grains and bread, lettuce and health supplements like seaweed.
Later in afternoon he has access to some ‘treat’ grains.
It’s only in his ear lobes not on his comb or wattles which are rich red. He is a German breed … a Vorwerk
