Collecting Cool Rocks! Minerals, Crystals, Fossils, Geodes, etc.

How does one find geodes? Is there something to look for? Or something that sets them apart from ordinary rocks?
I'm definitely not an expert. But the ones we found look like rounded knobby yellow cauliflower and varied in size from golf balls to basketball size. Some were slightly flattened or elongated. The shape once you see it is hard to mistake. And I was starting to get a feel for when they were solid or hollow judging by their weight. The experts said these geodes were formed under water unlike "others"? O_O Because of all the rain lately alot were washed off the mountains into a creek. Most of the ones I found I literally just picked up out of the creek. But I also dug some out of the creek bank. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø I could have spent all day doing this it was a lot of fun. A bit wet and muddy though.
