CONCERNING DE

Quote:
Not only will it take care of your ant problem, DE holds six times its weight in water so you can water less often.

I get food grade/CODEX DE from my feed supplier. It comes in 50# bags. If is not perma-guard, but it is food grade and it has the CODEX on it so I trust it. I just hassled her till she found a supplier for it. I think more than the name brand what is important is the fact that it is food grade/CODEX level. Other kinds of DE can contain insecticides and other ingredients harmful to people and chickens.

I mix mine with the feed at 2% by weight. It is used as a preservative in foods, anyhow, so mixing it in their food is no biggie. I do it in a wheelbarrow before storing it. I also sprinkle it on the floor when I clean the coop and under the bedding in the nest boxes.

While we do have flies this year, they are nowhere near as bad as I'd expect considering how wet it's been here in Missouri. I mean, you're gonna have some no matter what you do. It certainly cuts way down on them, though.

No parasites, no mites, no worms, no lice...I'll keep using it, thank you very much.

I too am on the hunt for DE. I live below the bridge in Michigan... waving to my UP neighbor.

I've hunted all over Gaylord and surrounding communities. I get the same " this is a crazy lady" look from feed store clerks. Anyone have some ideas to find what I'm looking for around Gaylord area? I'd rather support the local economy if I can without using mail order..

Thanks:)

Ok, I am sorry I did not come back on days ago. I have exhausted all efforts to find food grade DE. YES the crazy lady still has not found any. So here is my question, SPATCHER........will you sell some to me? And since I have a pay pal acct, how do I go about using it to send you payment? Please let me know. I am refusing to buy Sevin and I am REALLY trying to keep the babbies ( now juveniles) happy and healthy.

When I asked for DE at our local TSC they looked at me weird too, then pointed me to Stall Dry and said "Is this what you want?"

From what I read on the bag,it's DE and clay.

I don't feed it to them,I just use it in the run and shavings.

It was pretty cheap too.Might want to try that.

When I first got into chickens and read about DE

The Farm guy said no What you Want is

Poultry Powder

treats for fleas and mites.

Cheap, sprinkle a little in ther dust baths and sprinkle some in the coop and run.

It says Poultry Powder right on it. so you don't have to worry about Internet ordering or getting the right grade DE or whatever.

But whats in 'poultry powder'? If it's an insecticide, that's what many of us are trying to avoid. DE works mechanically, and no bugs develop a tolerance for it. I'll stick with the DE, I got mine from Freshwater Organics and am very happy with the price and the service - without paying for expedited delivery I had it within two days of ordering.
