Are there any open wounds? You might treat any open sores with triple antibiotic ointment (without pain killer) before spraying with blu-kote (and that stuff is REALLY messy -- he he moves when you spray, you will be wearing the stuff for a while). These the 7 week olds? he/she won't like being alone, either. Is there a friend or two you could put with him?

Sharol, why do you recommend the one without pain killer? When I bought some recently I didn't know which to get an in the end got the one with the pain killer because it was to treat a bird following bumblefoot surgery and I figured she'd be in a degree of pain. It sounds like maybe that was the wrong decision?

Hechicken I asked my brother in law who is a pharmacist about antibiotic stuff for the birds. If you get the one without pain killer it is formulated the same way as prescription antibiotic ointments...just a weaker form and you can use it in the eyes and anywhere. The use of pain killer limits some of the places you can put it. I would think on general body wounds it wouldn't make much difference. He looked it up for me so he'd know which ones were safe.
Jhammet it would probably be impossible to determine which were safe and weren't. Try the bluekote or the pine tar first and see if the pecking stops. If it does all is good. If it doesn't, then you can separate them.

It is a spray on so application is easy. And yes, it might make it possible to leave her with the others (no guarantees). But what I would try first is to spray it on, then put her with the others and see if the picking stops. If they continue to go after her, you might still need to segregate.

Ring neck doves aren't native. They come from Africa. I raised them for years. A turtle dove has markings on its wings where a ring neck dove has a soft even looking color. Look both up and you can see why I think so. Of course I couldn't see the whole dove in your picture.

I'm a little bit confused. I went to google and typed in ringneck dove and got results for ringneck turtle dove and ringed turtle dove. Are they not the same thing?

The KDWPT says that Ringed Turtle Doves are in KS. It also says that there are Eurasian Collared Doves here. I looked at pictures of the two of them and didn't see much difference. Finally, I found a website that contrasted them and even had a picture with both in it. (see post #6). After looking at that, I'm guessing that the dove we found is actually the eurasian collared dove. And, if that is true, I've been incorrectly calling them "turtle doves" for quite some time... Oops.

Lizzy, thanks for sharing that, that bird was beautiful! I enjoyed seeing the two compared together too. I have never seen the doves we have around this area that close, so I'm not sure which ones we have. I just enjoy hearing them calling & cooing to each other.

It's just miserable outside today, it's windy & really cold, I think it was 37 when I went out to let my chickens out this morning & let the little goats out. It's now 40, woohoo, it's supposed to be 30 for the low tonight. I'm glad I haven't planted anything yet. I'm beginning to think this is going to be one of those years when we just skip spring & go right to 100 degrees. I sure hope not, that is so hard to deal with.

They have gotten them bred to be pink peach etc etc. Mine were considered pink ring necks.
I'm not looking forward to getting out today at all. I guess that is why I'm still sitting on the computer.

Your ringnecked dove looks very similar to the one we had here. However, it also looks very similar to the eurasian collared and the ringed turtle doves. From now on, I might just start calling them "doves" and leaving off the turtle part because now I'm not sure which one's which! They all look so similar!

I agree with you all on the weather. It is super cold here today. We set a record yesterday for the coldest high and are on track to smash the record by quite a bit today (previous record for the coldest high for today was 38... today's forecast says today should get to about 31). It is looking probable that the wind chill won't get out of the low teens today. It is downright COLD out there. I'm looking forward to a warm-up, which looks like it should start tomorrow.

On another note, my husband took my car to the dealership today to have it looked at. We've been having problems with it not wanting to stay started, running pretty roughly, drastically decreased gas mileage, etc. They think we need a valve job done on it, and they estimate it to cost over $1000. Yikes! It's cheaper than a new car, but my car only has ~65,000 miles on it. You'd think that that shouldn't be enough to need major engine work! We're planning a trip in a couple weeks, so we need to get the car fixed up so we can go on our trip...

A valve job at 65k,, sounds suspicious to me. I also had a trip planned for 2 weeks from now, was going to go watch my son graduate from basic, the weather has screwed that up for me.
