Consolidated Kansas

Danz, how is your injured hen this morning? Poor girl, she must be in pain. Maybe she will just hang out in her box and recover. I'm glad your mom can get around with the walker, though. That is a big help! I hope she continues to do better.

Trish, I candled my silkie eggs yesterday-- they are on Day13, but they are clear. Sigh. I'll be tossing those out. The Rosecomb eggs, I haven't messed with. I'd LOVE to candle those and see if any are starting to develop. They are on Day 8, but I figure I'll go ahead and candle them in a couple more days-- either on 10 or 11. That should give them plenty of time to settle and at least let me know if the shipping messed them up or not. I don't know-- maybe I'll wait a day or two past that. I'm not in a hurry to candle them. Sounds like you have a lot of rabbit drama going on with the cage set up and getting everyone situated. The new bunnies sound like they will be a lot of fun-- I think babies would be awesome!

Tonya (Taz) so sorry about your MIL. Sounds like she has a rough time ahead of her with the treatments she'll be getting. I hope your dad recovers. I had that same thing happen to my mom a couple of years ago. She called me and said she couldn't get off the floor and come help. I drove over and she had been throwing up and couldn't stand up. Any time she lifted her head, she started throwing up. It was really bad vertigo-- her sense of balance was off. Anyway, I called an ambulance and they took her to the hospital where she ended up being admitted because they couldn't figure out what was going on. She didn't seem to have an ear infection, but they said the hairs in her ear must have been effected by something to cause the imbalance and nausea. She got to come home a day later and still had to lay down and was on some kind of drug that was supposed to help. But it really didn't do much except make her tired and sleep all day. It took about 7 days before she could really walk around again. That whole week she crawled to the bathroom.

TntBlake-- I'm with you-- bring on that warm weather!! My fingers just get slower and feel a bit stiffer. No pain, though.

Well, my DH's plane arrives home around lunch time today! He's been in PA for the week for work-- he goes up, fixes problems, and gets his team back on track. Boeing sends him up there a lot-- (it's another Boeing plant in Philly). ANYway... it will be interesting to hear if anyone asked him about the Wichita plant here. But I'm just so HAPPY he will be home in a few more hours!!!

(having 3 kids all week by yourself isn't a lot of fun-- no matter how many times I do it)

Hey guys, does anyone use, or know where I can buy Tek Trol locally? I just assumed Atwood's would have it, duh! It's a disinfectant that can be used to mist the eggs before incubating. It's supposed to improve hatch rate.

We were JUST talking about this a few days ago! :) No one knows of anywhere to find it locally. You could always call around and if you find it-- let us know! Checoukan said she buys it online.

Taz, so sorry about your mother-in-law and your dad - I hope it is just an ear infection, as antibiotics usually make a difference pretty quickly.

Hawkeye, I can't believe those Rosecombs are on day 8 already - it seems like you just set them. Incubating always seems to take forever when I am doing it and go really fast when its someone else LOL. I may be getting some eggs today so tonight or tomorrow I'll be setting those. I haven't incubated in a year so I'm really excited.

Tweety - how are those chicks and ducklings doing now that they've settled in? I bet you're having a lot of fun playing with them.

Trish - glad you were able to get your son's stuff moved to make room for your own stuff, and got your rabbit cages set up.

On the taxes...regardless of whether you use TaxCut or Turbo Tax, isn't it a little freaky that there is such a big discrepancy on the refund depending on which you use? It seems like taxes should be taxes and whether you do it by hand, have an accountant do it, or use software, the figures should come out the same. I can see a person making an error but it seems like the software should figure it using the same tax rules and therefore should come up with the same amount.

Mitchell's Veterinary Supply at 21st and Mosley says they have something similar that would work for hatching eggs. I'm going to pick some up and give it a try. They've been in business for 47 years, my mom (and I'm no spring chicken) used to go there for vaccinations, etc., so I believe it will be fine.

Taz, does notinoz have your cell phone #? She's going to call me as soon as she has a closer idea as to the meet up time. Let me know if notinoz has your cell, if not I will need it tomorrow. Hard to hear the news about your dad. Praying for your family.

Sorry so rushed, crazy day!

Karen, can you let me know the name of it after you've picked it up? I'd be interested in giving it a try too. I've seen Mitchell Vet on the way past so know exactly where it is....

Things are going great, thanks for asking! The chicks are completely settled into a routine and have learned how to scratch. Gotta make the sides of the brooder higher - LOL! I also had to set up the water dish higher last night because I got tired of changing it out every few hours! You can already start to see the personalities of the different chicks. So far, the calmest and most submissive is the Buff Orp. The BR is middle of the line (but is usually the first to try something new and scratches the hardest) and the two Delawares are crazy with their running and flying attempts. I gave the chicks a taste of wheat grass yesterday (small tiny pieces and sprinkled a small pile of grit onto the floor next to the feeder). Funny thing is, I think they were more interested in scratching and finding the grit that had fallen under the shavings than anything. It was hilarious to watch the face dives when they got pecking too fast!

Duckies are doing good as well. We've been taking them out and holding them on our laps once an evening for 1/2 an hour so they can get used to it. They still run as far away as they can when I open the pen. But when the door is shut - they are happily splashing water out of the dish or munching on wheat grass. They are far more talkative than the chicks. I didn't expect that.

Darn it. I just lost a huge post. Grrrr! The control Z doesn't work here.
Taz sorry about your MIL and your Dad. I hope your Dad will recover quickly. I had a friend who was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and she lived another 3 years without surgery. If your MIL is strong enough to endure the treatments she has an excellent chance of the cancer going into remission. I have many family members and friends who have had cancer. I am a true believer that diet is the one true cure. Encourage her to eat lots of fish, fresh veggies and fruit and avoid carbs especially sugar. It really does make a difference.
My little hen seems to be holding her own. She actually stood up for a few seconds last night. I do wish she could walk but maybe in time. She is totally enjoying being pampered and loves eating out of my hand. She doesn't seem too interested in eating unless I hand feed her but then she eats really good.Oh geez! Another thing to add to my list of things to do.
It's going to be a busy day. We are going to Topeka later to pick up my new tiller. I am also taking a couple pairs of chickens when we go. An acquaintance went through a nasty divorce. Knwoing it would hurt him, his ex wife killed all of his chickens. How sick can people be?
It's been a few months but he is finally to the place where he can get chickens again. He is a single parent from a previous marriage so he has his hands full. I just thought the right thing to do would be to donate him a couple of breeding pair. He is going to surprise his son when he gets home from school.
I don't think I've explained my Mom's illness. She has a rare incurable lung disease called bronchiectasis. It is very similar to cystic fibrosis. Her lungs are filled with fibrous tissue and fluid. So there is no real room for oxygen to get in. Because she uses all of her energy just to breath and she has trouble eating because of a constant cough, she has lost down below 90 pounds. She has lost all muscle tissue including those in her heart. Her heart goes into fibrillation for long periods of time which further exhausts her. He feet swell from congestive heart failure so she can't wear shoes. The doctors have said they expected her to die a few years ago but she has always been a very strong and active person. She is only alive because she is so determined. But she has gotten so weak that now her brain isn't functioning like it should. Her thoughts are clear. She just forgets what she is doing. My Dad has had multiple heart problems, strokes, heart attacks, a few pacemakers, bypass surgery etc. The doctors are now saying he is too weak to undergo another surgery. He is having to take care of my Mom when one of us isn't there and it is wearing him out. I never saw my Dad cry but he has been crying a lot lately. He is just so afraid of loosing my Mom. We are all a very close family so it's hard on all of us.

As far as the Tek trol, I am not sure what would be the equivalent, but I know you can order it from Smith Poultry and Game Bird supply. Get the concentrate, you can dilute it and it lasts a long, long time. They are reasonably priced, ship quickly, are great people and they are a Kansas company.

The other choice would be Oxine.

I just candled my 18 partridge wyandotte bantam eggs. AT LEAST a dozen of them are showing developement. Yippee! It is still early, but I'm hoping for a good hatch on them.

I went to take a BCmarans out of the incubator this morning. It had one eye that wouldn't open. The eye didn't look quite normal, and I couldn't pull it open when gently pulled at it. I thought, "Great. Now what?" Anyway, I gave the chick a drink and as soon as I tipped him up to let him swallow he popped his eye open. Shees. I don't know how he had it closed so tight before. I've never had that happen. I guess the laugh was on me.

I feel a lot better today. No fever, no body aches, (I'll spare you the other details!) lots more energy, but I still feel a little weak. I've done more today already than I did in the last 2 days! The wind has died down some, so after Mike's cardiac rehab appointment I think I will clean out the chicken tractor house and the barn. Then if I have any energy or time left I'll do the coop, too.

Hope everyone has a great day.

Hi everyone! It's been several months since I have been on here. I have a 5 year old and a toddler and it was getting too hard to keep up. Anyway Im back now. We still have all our birds including the ones we hatched. We also just got 12 new babies last night. I have about a half a dozen goose eggs in the incubator now because ours started a nest then left it. I'm not sure if I got them in time b4 they got too cold though. I'm sure they are fertile though because one was broke and u could see a small bloody thing in it.
