What an adorable chick Hawkeye. He looks like he is going to be super fluffy.
RVRoman, to me that chick looks like a Mottled Houdan. The have a small crest and they have 5 toes and the coloring is right. The nice thing is he is rare enough that you should be able to sell it for a decent price if you want later on. I would contact Ideal and let them know that they sent the wrong breed and they will credit you for the chick, so if you order again you will have a credit, or if it was on a credit card they will change the charge. I actually got a couple Houdans from Ideal myself that were supposed to be Polish a couple years ago.
I understand that Ideal contracts out to several breeders for some of their chicks so mistakes can be made. I got some poor quality chicks from them as well as some of the top show quality birds from them so you never know.
I just got home and it's 11:00 PM so I'm going to write in the morning. I'm totally worn out!
Can you breed large fowl with bantams? The Houdan is the closest picture I have found yet, but this chick is TINY, or is it possible its just a small chick. It would be really neat if it were a Houdan, they are super cool looking and then she would match the character I named her after!

Oh and I decided my buff will be chunk instead of Lillith, its... just... so... fitting!!!! She is the chunkiest cutest little chickie I have ever seen. I am actually really excited to have more.
IM A FULL BLOWN CHICKEN ADDICT!!!

Oh my gosh, that definitely looks like it should be called Yeti! I love it. I want one! DH sternly said "No more" after my faux pas today with my accidental babies. I am hoping for a poof head with my littlest though.
Thank you!! He has really fluffed up now! Yeti is hilarious! What a great name! Booo on not having any more birds! Well, if you have to get rid of boys, you may get your numbers back down. I hope your little chick turns out to be the Houdan Danz thinks it could be! They have crests and are really pretty!

Hawkeye, Oh that is a keeper for sure, what a cutie! Congrats, I'm so happy for you!

Then drum roll..... I came back in after parking the truck back in it's spot again & guess what, I have two baby turkeys! I'm so excited! I didn't even know they were starting to hatch. I think there might be one or two more that are trying to pip. The strange thing is one is definitely a Royal Palm, which they're supposed to be, but I'm not sure what the other one is. It's dark in color & not anything like the other one, so I sent a message to the person on eBay that I got the eggs from & asked them if they have other kinds of turkeys because this one definitely is not a Royal Palm. I will have to take pics once they get dried off & start moving around better. Right now they're still wet & not walking yet. I still have one baby Ameraucana in the hatcher that has been drying off & it thinks these turkeys are baby chicks. It keeps going up to them & cuddling with them & pecking them to get up like it did the other chicks. So, I guess I'll find out hopefully what my mystery turkey poult is. I'm still waiting on more of the chicks to hatch, so far none are pipping.
WHEW! I was exhausted reading all of your work, good grief! It was hot yesterday, too. I'm soooooo excited about your turkey!!! Post a pic of the RP ones! OH, and I want to see what the little brown one looks like. :)
Wow!!! At last, Hawkeye! Congrats on your beautiful baby! I'm so happy for you!

This evening we had some friends come out to see our chickens. Now that's different, isn't it? Anyway, she's Chinese, has only been here 3 years and she's so excited about the birds. Her husband was really interested in them also, especially the eggs. She says the Chinese community really wants free range meat birds and eggs. It made me laugh when she said "Chinese don't like fat chicken, Chinese like normal chicken". She and her DH actually went to a place that raises the Cornish X birds and bought some that they cleaned themselves while there. That was an interesting scenario.

I've got to go -- I am so tired. Big work day again tomorrow! I'm hoping to get all my tomato and pepper plants in the ground that I started myself. I really want to make my own salsa this year and can it. I just learned to can last year and did tons of applesauce. It was really good and we enjoyed it through most of the winter. Now how do I go about planting while wrapped in a blanket to protect myself from further sunburn?
Sorry about your sunburn, I do that every year, too. I already did it. Go out with a hat and long sleeves. I wear a cami with an unbuttoned long sleeve button up shirt so that I stay cool, but avoid more sun exposure. No fat chickens, hu? I didn't even know chickens could get fat until my girl over did it on the BOSS. Good luck on your planting today!

Thanks, Danz. :) I think that's neat that you can get really great quality birds because of who they contract out to! I think a couple of my Polish really arent' that bad!! So I didn't do too badly myself there on the hatchery. I'm going to take a couple of them to the county Fair! (I just hope their tails come in better).

Oh my.. miss a couple days and wow.. gonna take me a bit to respond to posts, and I HAVE to.. so many exciting things going on!

Before I do that, did anyone else catch this story in the Lawrence Journal world? Very sad story for Lawrence. At least I don't think this will affect our TSC.

City officials tell Orscheln Farm and Home it can’t sell chickens or ducks from its Lawrence store

Apparently, the 20 chicks and 10ft per chick rule applies to the stores as well as residential home. Come on.. how stupid can our city counsel be?

WOW-- just read that and that is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of!! Everyone knows that chicks huddle up and don't need 10sq ft per bird when they are little!! What idiots! That law definitely needs to be rewritten. I'll have to pass this on to my brother, he is wanting chicks and he lives in Lawrence and he is an attorney. Interesting, but I hope they can get it figured out or there could be a riot!

hehee!

Okay, so I have some EXCITING news!! I candled the cracked egg last night that I covered in wax...... and it's GROWING!!! I didn't check the others, I hate to mess with them when they are so fragile right now. I plan on candling them around Day 10 or so, that way I can throw out the bad ones. I can hardly believe the cracked egg is developing. I sure hope it hatches, too! That will really be a miracle.

I also bought one of those quail waterers last week for my silkie chicks. You all were right-- they can drown in the regular chick ones, my silkie was walking in the chick one (before I got it switched out) like it was a fountain and got itself all soaking wet. My new chick spent the night in the incubator and I put him out in the brooder with the other chick. He immediately started to eat. How do they know how to do that? He's really wobbly and not standing up really well yet, but he seems strong. The 4 day old chick seems really happy to see him-- he goes up and looks at him and runs around him. They already snuggled for a minute before they both went off exploring.

Yep - you said exactly what I was going to say. While I like the law stipulating to 10sq ft of space per bird, so that the commercial chickens can be kept more humanely, there HAS to be a difference between and adult bird and a baby that is only interesting in sitting under a heat lamp. It seems to take a special type of pedantic individual to be a code enforcement officer, if you ask me.

Hawkeye - Congrats on Yeti!!!

Well, my little Cochin that I posted pics of a couple of days ago crowed a half dozen times this morning. I feel that is a little precocious considering he is only 9-10 weeks old and still peeping. There is something very incongruous about a chick that both peeps and crows! They were pretty decent crows although he's such a tiny thing, being a bantie, that it was a tiny little noise too. Once he got them out of his system he seemed happy to go about the usual morning routine so hopefully he'll limit himself to a half dozen a morning until we move

Wow! I'm pleased but stunned! I thought it would end up being one of those things where you had to try but between shipping and dropping and being cracked, it would just be too much for that little egg. If it goes all the way and hatches you'll have to come up with an appropriate name for a really tough little guy or gal.

Man, Tweety, that is just unbelievably ignorant!!!!

Hawkeye, I can't believe that chick is growing for you in the cracked egg!!!!! I'm so happy that it's made it this far! If it actually hatches, I'm gonna scream! Way to go!

Thanks for the tips on not burning myself worse! I'm going to go change. I already have a good hat, just need to put the sucker on!

Guess what everybody!!! I went to check the hatcher this morning and I have ONE LITTLE BOURBON RED TURKEY already hatched!!!!! there are also TONS OF PIPS GOING ON! I'm just so psyched to see how many make it!!!

What does that mean for the TSC that is down the street? Are they not in the city limits? If so, then ****! This is where I go get my chicks. The Olathe TSC strictly adheres to the 6 chicks per purchase. The Lawrence TSC doesn't care and will sell the chicks on a per chick basis. I guess the biggest difference is the Lawrence TSC can move more volume than the Olathe TSC.

RIGHT!?!?! I was shocked, too!!! I figured NO WAY! I must have done a good job covered up all the cracks with the wax. I think not dripping it on, but rubbing it on instead helped. I wonder if I could name this chick (if he makes it..) "Crack"?

I only checked it last night because I didn't want it exploding on me. I can't wait to check the others in a few days!
