Consolidated Kansas

Goodness yes! One of our fellow BYC'ers has already had to evacuate multiple times. She first loaded up all her animals (including 35 freedom rangers) and went to a friend's but then they got evacuated so she went to a relative but THEY got evacuated. I'm not sure where she is now and I'm sure she's too busy to post an update. She is from the Waldo Canyon area where the fire is only 5% contained and already 32,000 homes have been evacuated. The first just recently jumped a barrier they were trying to create to contain it (I was just reading about it on Yahoo! News a few minutes ago).
Yeah, that's not good. :( That is crazy about all of their moves.

I'm really sorry to hear about those being effected by the CO fires. That's just the pits. Hope it all turns out okay.

It's a real shame the hurricane that is making it rain in the southeast like 15 inches a day couldn't just pass through Kansas on its way to Colorado and give every one some relief!
I can't imagine having to evacuate for fire. I can't breath near smoke at all and I know that that black smoke and ash will cover everything around. Not to mention those who loose their homes and their animals.

Pikeman, sorry about your AC, hope it gets fixed fast. Your coop is looking great! I'll bet your chicks will be very glad to get into their new home.

That is terrible about Colorado, I spent many vacations there in the past. I hope everyone is able to get out of the way safely.

I have been trying for days to catch that darned little Ameraucana in the garage & so far to no avail. He is just too smart & he knows as soon as I get the net he should run & hide. Today I went in there & he was in the live trap, but he's too light to trip it. I tried to get over there fast enough to get the net over the end, but he saw me & ran out really fast. I don't know how I'm ever going to get him. Do any of you have any ideas? I didn't see the other one that got loose yesterday yet today. I hope it turns up because this guy wanting these chicks will buy it if I can find it. I still have all of the rest of the chicks in the crates in the house. I covered up the crates last night so it would be totally dark & they would be quiet & that worked until it got light this morning. My DH didn't know they were in here until they started peeping this morning. He didn't say much, I just told him it was too hot in the garage for them & he said, oh I know. I think he's starting to get used to it all. He might as well I guess, huh.

The little brown leghorn never did show back up, so something must have gotten it. The others that I let out seem to be hanging mostly around the front of the run so far, I think they're scared to go too far away & that's fine with me. I would rather they don't as of yet until they learn their way around some.

Another scorching day ahead, everybody be careful & try to stay cool!

Trish, I don't know what to tell you on your little escapee. I haven't been in the exact same situation - when mine escape its outdoors instead of in an enclosed place like a garage and it hasn't been too difficult so far to corner and catch them. If your garage is like ours, there are lots of nooks and crannies for him to hide in and he apparently knows them all. If you can figure out where he's sleeping at night (maybe look for piles of poop), perhaps it would be easier to catch him then?

I once caught a wild parakeet. I did it like you would in the old days. I had a heavy bx. The one I used was actually plastic. I placed food and water under the box and balanced it on a stick so it was maybe 10 inches off the ground. I tied a rope to the stick and ran it into my kitchen window which was quite a distance. When he went in to eat I just pulled the rope. Now, the bad part about that was getting him out without him flying away. I actually had to catch him a second time which was a little harder. If I were going to do it again I would have a lid of some kind under the box and put the food on it so I could turn it right side up to get the bird out. This actually worked so well I ended up catching a couple cardinals and a blackbird with it too. Didn't keep them cause they were very wild but it was fun just to catch them.
Yes I'm an adult and was then too but sometimes I just have to do things just because!

Just got the birds fed and watered and had some more losses today. It's the dumb birds that sit in the coop that get overheated and die. I now have no meaties to butcher. They all died from the heat. Worst part is they were just big enough I could have butchered them.

Bridget from Michigan - that just moved to SE Kansas - have you found us here yet? There's a few people in your neighborhood that would love to meet you!

I just gotta get home from my mom's! We have had a great time while I recover, but my knees feel pretty good now, and I have to go back to work in 2 weeks, so it's time to get home and back in the swing of thingsl

Danz, no doubt-- isn't it always feast or famine? To much rain, too little, etc. SOOO funny about catching a bird with a box trap! I mean, that's right out of the Tom and Jerry cartoons! LOL What did you do with the wild parakeet? They can't live here in the winter, right? Do they migrate on their own, or do you think someone let it go, or it got away? When we lived in California for nearly 2 years, parakeets just lived there in the wild! We used to have them and hang their cage up on the back deck and then their song would bring in other parakeets who would come up and look at them.

Trish, I would think you'll have to catch him at some point, but I'm with Danz on the box-- maybe that would be a great idea? I hope you get both of them caught.

Nana- did you recruit another Kansan?? YAY!! Hope they make it over to join us! :) There are several of you down in SE area. Glad your knees are feeling better. 2 more weeks left till back to work, hu? I hope you will be okay. Are you feeling pretty good on them yet?

We had swimming lessons today, but we didn't stay to play in the pool. I was supposed to sell those roosters (or give away/whatever) today-- but surprise, I never heard anything from them. I'm not too surprised, but I'd sure like to have them gone. I think Sticky is a boy-- that's the one that barely made it. If he's a boy, I'm going to keep him "just because". He had such a hard start in life and he's still only half the size he should be. He is not growing. I'll have to take a picture of the birds that hatched with him-- you will NOT believe how small he is in comparison.

That's just it, I go out there every night thinking I will find the little dickens roosting somewhere but where ever that is he hides himself well. I haven't even seen the other chick today at all, so who knows if it's still alive or not.

I have one peachick, only one, so I'm going to have to find some friends for the poor little thing. I think I'm done buying peacock eggs, I just want to find some peachicks now. He or she sure is a cutie though & very friendly, just lonely. I don't even have any chicks hatching yet to keep the poor thing company, maybe tomorrow. I guess it can go into the crate with the little chicks eventually. It probably will think it's a chicken.

I went out & all of the birds are really suffering in the heat so I did the usual spraying down areas, refreshing pans of water & put out the mister for the young chicks. I heard one hen really having a hard time breathing under the bush, I hope I don't lose her. I sprayed down the bush & underneath with water so it would cool them a bit. That bush hangs way down almost to the ground & they love to sit under it. The rabbits saw me coming with the hose & some don't mind a spray down & some run for the farthest point away from me, but I know it makes them feel better afterwards for a while anyway.

I think tomorrow we will be about ready to put on the floor boards on the new coop & then maybe this weekend we can go get more wood for the walls. My DH has got his cough back & can't seem to get rid of it. I told him he probably needs to find a Dr. & go see about it. He rarely ever goes to see a Dr, but I told him he needs to have one just in case.

Well I have to go run to Ark City & get more feed. I hope everyone is staying as cool as they can. Oh & my Cream Legbar eggs that were supposed to arrive today didn't, so they're floating around out there in this darned heat, I can't catch a break with these. These are the replacements the guy sent me.

Teresa, I'm about to think I should swing by with my "chicken catchers". I swear to you, my kids can catch anything, anywhere, anytime, anyhow.
